Anything medical, what Spence said, or take civil service exams that pertains to something that interest you.

heh , think we are maxed on LQ's around here
Yeah , been looking into healthcare too .
Going for interviews again, has really hit it home for me this year . First interview the other day.... Think the chef had maybe 1 intact tooth in his mouth and he was younger then me . Then he said he runs the line like a drill sergeant and wants me to know that ahead of time . heh Followed up by an owner who can run all the stations, uh oh !

one thing not to do
is to think ...i need a fresh start
time to start over completely
because you can build upon
what you've learned as a chef
and use it in a "related" career
as you have "insider" knowledge
about how to order in volume.

Very good insight and words well said, you'd cut that learning curve alot, which would help offset the finance curve.

I was in a similar situation in 2010. I had just got out of the military and my skill set did not really lead me anywhere.
Long story short I started school (skeptically at first) and am glad I did. I used to hate high school, but its a lot different now. I have got a ton of opportunities from my hard work and am thrilled I made the choice.
The big questions is what do you enjoy? What can you do every day and not mind it? Some people like working with numbers, some are people persons. It is different for everyone.

Tried for a few gigs highlighting experience that I could use in different fields . No calls yet . Seems few in this economy are interested in hiring someone with little direct experience .
The shrooms ... Wasted a bunch of time trying to team up with someone else. Basically what I figured , and others said would happen, did. Since then multiple local farms have got into it , and the price crapped out . Also tried for a consulting position to no avail . It was teaching organic mushrooms cultivation funded through a goverment grant ....
Most civil service postions would most likely require some formal education or related experience , no?
Anyone here in healthcare , maybe a PT/A's or MRI techs. I could maybe see myself doing that , if I could get through school .. It's been 15 years though , just a lil crusty .

hearing that gives me a lot more motivation.
What can I do everyday ? Definitely not sitting in a work gestation box 9-5... Rather something on my feet or with people. Like the idea of xray or mri tech or multiples in that field .

Trust me when I tell you this, I was very skeptical about going back to school. I was nervous I wouldn't do well, etc.
I was seriously more worried about going back to school than I was about deploying to Iraq (ridiculous , I know.) But, I am so glad I did it.

Sales - If you can find a good product that you believe in. Always seems like the sales guys make the most money, get the most perks and have a lot of free time to fish.
Maybe you could use your chef background to go into food sales, restaurant equipment, etc.
Good Luck!!!

were are you located?
we are opening a new restaurant in springfield mass. not soon but its in the works.
and im still looking for a new sous chef/assistant km in providence.
and our other restuarants are always loooking for good people.
good company to work for, health and dental, paid vacations, paid parking in the city and an expense account.
PM me if you want more info and I can fill you in.
The other thing I can suggest in our field is food sales rep from a company like sysco/agar or company broker that represents a few companies.

the issue with a lot of corporate based jobs on sites like usa jobs or goverment/state based websites, is the positions are already filled but the legally have to advertise the job for a period of time, take applications but most of the time end up hiring the next person in line anyway.
Ive been trying to get a health inspector job now for the last 4 years, i know a few people who work there and they filled me into the process.
RI might be more corrupt than most states but think it happens all over.

Massbass - pm sent
Nightfighter - thanks , good idea
Gregw - yeah thats prob about how nervous Iam about the thought of school
Redsoxticket - Heh , the wife wanted to by Mickey's laundromat a few years back
jredfly - if i could find something worth selling
Chefchris - Im in gansett , almost sent ya a pm a few back when you posted you were looking . Just been trying to avoid the kitchen like the plague . Thought about the food rep too . Sent ya pm about the gig
Have loads of interviews lined up , unfortunately they are all in the kitchen . Just nothing Im excited about . Plenty of mediocre restaurants abound in rhody . Most of the better ones don't wanna pay because all of the "great experience " your gaining . heh . I just dont wanna end up the broken down 55+yr guy , relinquished to prepping in the back ..........

I switched careers last year. I was set to start back to school too but got derailed with a big life event and had to bag out. Now I am in maintenance in a healthcare setting, looking to advance in current company or move to a hospital gig. It's okay. Glad I made the move.
Good Luck cheferson.

The mortgage biz is booming and 80% of our competition is gone. It's about 1500 to get licensed, tested, fingerprinted, cori checked DNA samples etc. Make your own hours. Not a headache like real estate. No degrees required as long as your not a felon and your credit is decent u would be ok. You would want to broker not work for a bank or retail lender. There is absolutely nobody getting into the business these days and things are good. The, it can't get any worst has finally passed after thinking it for over 3 years straight.
