I heard initial reviews from people that saw it last night at midnight said that its great. some went with the same assumption as Larry that its overblown they came out raving about it and said they were glad they went.

Those reviews you posted do not bode well for the movie? Sounds pretty "Ishtar" to me? If its in 3-D I would never see it no matter how good it is.....3-D does not agree with my eyes!

Count my family in as well. My friend went to the midnight 3D last night and couldn't stop telling me about it. I had to shut him up this morning.

Now I really am having second thoughts that this will be a blockbuster: the early reviews since release are coming in TOO GOOD!

Maybe one of the MEGA-blockbusters..........

For me to go to a movie theatre is more rare than an Audobom volunteer runing over a Piping Plover

The last two movies I saw in a theatre were The Perfect Storm and Good Will Hunting

The last two movies I thought lived up to their pre hype were Heat (DeNiro and Pacino first time) and Raging Bull

I saw a review on TV this morning that says Avatar is not going to live up to the hype and that tells me it might.

For me...it looks like a chick flick combined with a video game....YYYYUUUUCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKK

I wont say definately not but it will take a lot of raving from people who are not just conforming to popuar society

CNN Reviews Avatar:

Review: 'Avatar' delivers on the hype

(CNN) -- James Cameron has done it again.

For maybe the third time in his career, the immodest Canadian has made "the most expensive movie ever," confident that showmanship never goes out of style.

He was right about "Terminator 2," and he was right about "Titanic," and at this stage it looks more than likely he'll be proved right about "Avatar," too.

Already it feels like an epochal movie, a landmark fantasy film on par with "2001: A Space Odyssey," "Star Wars" and "The Lord of the Rings."

Like those (very different) movies, "Avatar" stretches the bounds of the cinematic imagination. It shows us something we've never seen before: an entire alien world, a new and complex ecosystem rendered in three dimensions with dazzling fluidity and detail.

Given the diversity of the human species, there is no “normal” human genome sequence. We are all mutants.

I just got back from the 12pm showing. Whatever I write here will do no justice to this movie. One word.........CLASSIC! I didn't watch it in 3D and was still blown away. My kid was mesmorized and it went by real fast for an almost 3hr flick. I would never suggest bringing a kid to a 3 hr movie but we were both glued. I'm in awe and SERIOUSLY would see this again. Go see it!

Alot of substance! Story line was great and really got to the core of humanity. Cameron really hones in on the human nature. I may need to go see this again.

Larry, 27 million was Friday's Total...not including Saturday and Sunday...it estimated at around 80 million for the weekend.

'Avatar' Blasts Off on Opening Day - Box Office Mojo

Granted...not enough to win the bet...but that would be enough to be the #1 December opening weekend ...EVER...Not what I would call a Bomb

But we shall see what happens come Monday when they release the final numbers

What were the terms of the bet you guys made? This movie should have some legs to it as well. I'm sure it will be in the movies a few months but what do I know.

‘Avatar’ blasts off with $232 million worldwide

The film fell short of the record for December debuts of $77.2 million set two years ago by Will Smith's "I Am Legend." But it did break the record for a film opening in 3-D, previously held by last summer's "Up" with $68.1 million.

James Cameron launched his science-fiction epic "Avatar" into a safe orbit as the costly film soared to No. 1 with $73 million domestically and $159.2 million overseas, for a $232.2 million worldwide total.

With that big a start, distributor 20th Century Fox was quick to proclaim it made a good investment with the estimated $400 million spent to make and market the film, which is Cameron's first narrative feature since 1997's "Titanic," the king of modern blockbusters.

"Absolutely. No question," said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for the studio, which reported stellar reaction in exit polls from audiences after seeing "Avatar." "The word of mouth is something that I don't know I've ever seen in this business before."

If you Twitter check out the Avatar tweets, coming in faster than 1/sec and all raving about the moving. Seems to be a world-wide response with the various languages appearing.
