Saltheart and I are the same age, so we were both 24 or 25 in 1978.
I had a legit 41" level snow in my backyard in Pawtucket. We were snowed in more than a week, before some front end loaders that they flew into Green from Buffalo were able to clear out our street.
Joe Garrahy, RI's governor at the time, made daily broadcasts from the State House bomb shelter. He wore the same red plaid flannel shirt every day. It became part of RI folklore, and I'm told that the shirt now hangs in the RI Hall of Fame (hopefully laundered).
There were trailer trucks and cars literally buried in the middle of I-95 in downtown.
