I've been out here 7 years. Way, way, way too much time out here. It breaks up the monotony of my day. I've made some good friends out here, I've experienced a TON of kindness from people I dont know. Really unbelievable stuff.
As far as the state of the site or any controversy out here, I think you may be forgetting or not out here long enough. In the past, threads were frequently closed, at least 2 a month. People got way out of line. People were also removed from the site for bad behavior. I havent see anythng like that in awhile. Whens the last time a thread has been closed?
Clogs - I dont agree on the experienced members - I think this place continues to be LOADED with some of the best guys out there. True ledgends. They just dont post about it.

I don't think the site sucks, but it would be nice if someone posted a fishing report once in a while. It seems that no one dares say anything about catching anything because, even if you don't name a spot, everybody knows where you fish so it's still spot burning. It's just really getting old.

For example, the first few responses to my recent thread about the north shore was "there are no fish there" I know some of that is in jest, but it's still kind of annoying. It's like, why the hell are you on here if you aren't willing to exchange experiences and stories? Everybody is just too damn paranoid of being accused of spot burning it's out of control.

The clickiness is was it is, but I've found that if you make an effort, maybe show up to some events or ask questions there are some poeple here that will help you out.

Several years back I used to post recaps of my trips to the cape.

Now rarely do as it seems to be frowned upon as spot burning if you were catching and post it.

Matt it was just a joke, you and I have joked about that in the past. but seriously there is a lack of good fish up here. it's not like years past when fish were everywhere this year seems like it's right place right time. Sorry

Shssssssssssssssssh!!!!!!! There are no fish here on the north shore, Cape Ann is dead, fish all gone. The pictures that I post are actually balloons with screened printed pictures of striped bass, the longer the balloon the bigger the fish, and if you want one that looks like you caught a 25 pounder cost $25.00 per balloon.

less is more

This site is definitely a little more tight knit and friendship based.
With that said even though I'm not apart of it, its still my first choice among the few sites I cruise.

I don't know how it use to be so I can't compare but I still think there's plenty of good stuff flying around here. I rather read five threads with six post of anything fishing, boat, life, plug, tool related then filter through 70 threads and countless post for nothing more then wasted time.

I think fish reports are fine. good or bad. When others aren't on fish it gives you some company in misery and when they are on fish it gives you some motivation and when you are on fish chances are you are not here.

after all its not like we have to subscribe and it pay to use the site.

I like the site too.I might bitch and cause trouble in the eyes of some but I log on quite often.I can't say I have met many fishing partners, nor have I attended any legs for a while but I still look to see what's up.I have met some folks whose company I enjoyTT,Animal,5/0,BB,Piemma,ProffessorM,TO,Slip,Afterhours,Bigfish , etc....
I have also met plenty of folks from the Striper Cup who I'd like to fish with, team affiliation notwithstanding;the entire Linesider team is full of real gentlemen, and they like beer.Even Cowhunter sent me a pm saying if I had any questions about my new motor to just ask. Nice gesture IMO. Guys who I would like to wet a line with someday just from reading their posts, whether they seem funny like TDF or insanely driven to fish like Numby or Cowhunter.Manzi used to be in the same mold too. It is a good mix but does seem stale recently. This site really jumped the shark when #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& left,he won't be back for family reasons but he spoke from the heart and that is difficult to replace. Some of his threads were like watching a trainwreck where you couldn't turn away. Those were the days of censorship here at S-B and I fell victim to the mods as well. Others resented the Ledge, which was in essence an invitation only forum for those in the clique.Very bad move from a bandwidth perspective I would think but as the man with tired feet will remind you;it is his site and if you don't like it, you are welcome to leave or be banned.

Best site ever.
Of course when your new to any of the forums you hang on everyword, then thru time and experience you may need less info and post less, unless you can help someone else.

I have met none but the best people here, and have made some very close and lasting friendships.

probably, but I'm past my prime. The only thing I am good at now is being grumpy, especially after sitting by myself in a boat last nite for hours and having blufish rip my eels to nutin.

That's all right Paul. Listening to Zappa HAS to count for something.

But all joking aside, the reason I lurk and don't ask a lot of questions is because of some of the responses I've gotten in the past. Not naming names (Hell I can't remember names anyway). I enjoy fishing the surf, and there is a lot to try to figure out and be successful when you are starting out. Read books, observed places at different times/tides etc. and I am still at the noob stage.

Speaking for myself, I don't want specific spots at specific times. While getting skunked time after time is frustrating, I am learning and probably don't even realize it. Just looking for some "Cliff Notes"

Ive been on this site since 2000 and have seen alot of people come and go.... Unfortunately this site had lost a wealth of knowledge from both boat and surfcasters over the years because frankly its not worth it. Those guys are done and wont post ever again... You go back a few years and there was alot more comrodity, guys helped eachother out.... Now its the opposite with alot more people getting into striped bass over the last few years . Most want it easy and its the same old whining, plug fishing is tougher than eel fishing, surfcasting is tougher than boat fishing, coms vs recs, Killing vs Releasing, same old crap to be honest so why bother... This was the last site that I enjoyed, I stopped posting on many of the other sites and some I havent posted in years... Im not to far from stopping here either, all I hear is "Why do you even go on there" from buddies of me...

Just to clarify, I know there are exceptions, people like you Fly Rod are helping!

Bob - no hard feelings at all and it wasn't directed at you. You have always been one fo the great guys around here. I know I've joked like that as well, it's just that we feel like we need to joke like that because of the culture that has developed ya know?

But you are right about the fishing this year IMO

It's THOSE conversastions I'd like to see more of.

I think a lot of it is also just the nature of fisherman, it's all about who'd D&&k is bigger and no one wants to give up their spots, I hear that, but some of it is just taken too far.

Geez, one negative thread because someone kept a fish and now the site sucks????

Since I've been coming here I have been both educated and entertained, which is why I come. Some good times shared with many of the guys here too. I love this site, goddammit.

I never came here looking for the holy grail of striped bass fishing, and thus, have never been disappointed. This site is like many others in that its a social networking site with fishing as the centerpiece. If you come for fishing related stuff only its still great, but there's much more to it than that.

couldn't of said it better mike exactly how I feel. Great entertainment value for me, i am a simpleton, also luv the friendships I have developed here and as far as fishing goes I like what I like and most likely at this point no one is changing that with their opinions, but I will still listen.

Adam, I am no angling expert, but I have had a great May and June from shore, maybe my best ever, including many day hits. One sunset 2 weeks ago, while I was in class, my brother scored 13 Stripers in less than 2 hours from shore. That is great fishing! Seen 'em hauled in from shore from the South Coast, all over the bay, and even up in the marshes of the most northern estuaries from the Bay. Try fishing with different people. I met an old friend from high-school and he showed me a freshwater lure that was slaying stripers from shore. Pay attention to what bait is in the water and grab a lure that resembles it. Funny thing is, everyone I have seen and know, who have used live eels or clams from shore, have been skunked. Know your white-water, tides, colors, action, and use both topwater and submersibles. Two nights ago, they were feeding and flopping all around me and I only caught one, but the excitement and challenge of enticing those bad-boys is almost as big a rush as hauling in "the big one."

I posted this on the whatever happened to Wild Bill Hickock thread (ChrisL) so I might as well copy it here as its relavent

The whole WMI thing would be hard to repeat.

I thought we got off to a great start here. We would have 100 menbers on the board and 40 would attend the barbecue before the 4 legs.

I think growth is hard but also the way this sight grew was unusual. It started growing as individuals joined and moved from other sites here. Then suddenly its growth was by groups. The MSBA crowd came in mostly all at once , then the CT sirfcasters and their seperate forum , then the wave of "Pros" and all the associated issues.

Its hard when the original group suddenly doubles with the influx of people who know eachother but not the existing core. If this happens 3 or 4 times , soon its like 4 or 5 seperate groups rather than the tightly knit initial group. It went from really knowing people to knowing about people as the rapid growth spirts in groups just became too hard to keep track of everybody.

Now I'm not being negative here. just recounting how I see things went that changed the nature of the original site and members to what we have now.

I don't think there's any way to redo things or rpeat history. I do think the key to moving back to the direction where we started would be to have more live events. No way the good relationships can get tight by just internet contact. Its a great way to break the ice and exchange info etc but to build a tight group of friends like in the beginning there needs to be face to face in person interactions.

I don’t post as much anywhere anymore. You kind of go trough these stages in life as others have said more eloquently. I must say that sb.com is the only site I look at every day and I am grateful that I met so many people though it. The NE flavor of the site is right up my alley and yes, although sometimes it can be a bit "same old" like any other place its still my favorite site. I feel like I know you guys for years yet many I've never meet. Maybe because the few that I did meet turned out to become good friends.

I suggest the following new rule in order to improve the atmosphere in the forum:

If one should post a picture of a caught fish, there should only be praise and commendation bestowed upon that post. No exceptions.

Those who break this rule would go to a temporary 'jealousy hole' for having a dissenting opinion of the original post. Other members would be able to flame the dissenter w/o the possibility of any responses from the guilty party in this 'q bin'. When the guilty is released and allowed to post again, he would be labeled 'tree hugging douche' or something similar under his user name for a probationary period of time.

Keep in mind that if you don't like my idea, you are in fact most likely a douche yourself - or at least a facsimile thereof.

Brilliant. 2-3% of the population are homosexual and not one of them chose to be that way. 2-3% of our children will be homosexual, and none of them or us will chose for them to be that way. I'm sure there are men in this forum who are deeply hurt by this sort of discrimination and lack of moderator input to correct it. Life for these people and their families is already plenty painful enough. Allowing posts like the above to stand unchallenged does indeed suggest this site can suck. Pathetic!

i think that the key word to luds' opening post is "right now"

this site is a living, breathing, entity that evolves as members leave, members change, members stay, and new blood gets pumped into it to keep it growing. and we seem to have ALL of that. sooooo, it is going to have its seasons of S#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&ESS tendered with its times of GREATNESS. and "now" is as fleeting as it gets,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,kinda like our NE weather. if ya don't like it, just wait a minute or so and it will change.

but what we ALSO enjoy is, imho, one of the most informative, hilarious, good natured, thick-skinned, sharing, caring, high hooking, collection of surfcasters known to the Striper Coast. we are quite unique in that respect~~~ some LOVE it, some don't, and there are those some ones that are inbetween. but, in the end it is a place that i choose to call "home". simply meaning that i feel welcomed, there is a sense of belonging, and the fraternal aspect of this obsession we share is real and as tangible as i choose to make it.

and that is what i've learned most in my time here, in that, as is true in Life you WILL get back what you put into SB.com. however in my case, i have gotten tons more. there are times when i feel like a sponge, soaking up more than i will ever be able to repay. other times i do not know how/why ya'll continue to tolerate my brand of "crazy". most times i know that when i do invest the time, either cyberally or in reality, i am crushing my surfcaster learning curve, meeting some true gentlemen of kindred spirit, and genuinely having a BLAST along the weigh.

THANKS TO YOU ALL for making SB.com what it is "right now", what it is becoming, and what it will be as we move forward. Bossman, you know how much i appreciate ALL that you do to keep the lights turned on and the bells and whistles in tune. and here's a shout-out to the mods for keeping it reel from their thankless positions.

"The first condition of happiness is that the connection
between man and nature shall not be broken."~~ Leo Tolstoy

Happy Hunting to ALL!
