The British actually fought against them in 48 and for some years afterward....they really did much on there own with brilliant strategy and underground training of the special night forces...and of course they had to import weapons but the UN turned their backs on them when they were faced with multi Arabic armies. Loads of $$$$$$$$$$ did`nt hurt either....but strategy was key and their heart.

The Brits changed their tune when Nasser overthrew King Farouk of Egypt and started making noises about closing down the Suez Canal to British shipping, and nationalizing BP's oil wells. In fact, it was his shutting down the Suez Canal in the 1956 war that sparked the alleged clandestine British intervention. There are photographs and newsreel footage of Mirage fighter jets sporting strange cross-shaped markings, instead of the Star of David. That's what led to the speculation that they were being flown by British and French pilots and not Israelis.

Capitalism at its best?
Oh my god....
BEIRUT, Lebanon (CNN) -- The Bush administration is waiving the requirement that Americans have to pay or reimburse the government for being evacuated from Lebanon, aides to two senators said.

I'm mixed on this. I dont think we should say to the US citizens in Lebanon, that yeah we'll rescue you, but only if you pay $2000! (or whatever the price tag is) or hit em up with a a large bill after the fact. The US should'nt charge its citizens in a time when they need help. Its like sending a huge bill to the people rescued during Katrina.
The other side of me says, WTF are Americans doing in Lebanon anyway!? Dont these folks know the middle east is prob not the best place to be now adays!? So part of me says, hey you guys arent that bright for hanging out in countries that have terroist groups roaming the streets!

Personally I don't see what the problem is in charging them, they were going to have to pay commercial airfare to come home anyway. Now I wouldn't charge them commercial rates, but enough to cover the cost of the fuel would seem appropriate.

Skippy,
1. There were a lot of Lebanese Christians who fled civil war in the 1970's that came to the United States. Not only is there a cultural tie, but there are many family ties as well.
2. Lebanon is pretty modern and Beirut is considered to be one of the more cosmopolitan cities in the region. For the most part it's quite Western and has a large tourisim industry.
3. And perhaps most importantly...the single best thing we can to do combat terrorisim in the long run is to encourage the free exchange of business and ideas with other nations.
A strong collaborative relationship with Lebanon is critical to the future of the weak democracy that exists today.
We can't collaborate if we're not there...

The news tonight had this astounding factoid: There are 25,000 Americans in Lebanon! 25,000! What's the attraction there?

Of those twenty-five thousand americans. Most were born in Lebanon and are naturalized here. A small portion are probably students at Amercian University there. The rest are people born in America that work there for banks and the cia and stuff.

How About With the Growing Global Market there is a need for people in business to be familiar with different cultures in the world. So if someone needs to learn the Lebanese culture what better place to learn it than in Lebanon.
Also with the Current Middle-eastern Climate escalating there is also a need for people in the Government to have an understanding of different cultures too, so , Again, if someone needs to learn the Lebanese culture what better place to learn it than in Lebanon.
I don't think that all the American Students that went over there for college went there to enroll in Terrorism 101

Oh that gets plastered all over CNN/Fox/etc.

Frankenstein fears after head transplant

A new brain could be available in the future
A controversial operation to transplant the whole head of a monkey onto a different body has proved a partial success. The scientist behind it wants to do the same thing to humans, but other members of the scientific community have condemned the experiments as "grotesque".

What I find simply incredible is how people condone this over use of force when history has proven again and again that groups like Hezbolla are like a video game character who gets stronger each time you hit it.
Unless you can remove it's head, more innovative measures are required.
But it's gonna get much worse. From most accounts the charade of a more stable Iraq is falling apart even among the diehard Bush supporters. The civilian deaths and sectarian violence is rising at an alarming rate.
Rumor is even some GOP Congresspeople are starting to sing the Murtha tune...and you ain't gonna be able to call them liberal defeatists.

This brings us to one major component of World War Three which I feel has been ongoing now for some years. The head being all Muslims who advocate Jihad for Israel, The United States, all our allies, and any nation or people who oppose them. Its really overwhelming.

Nobody ever implied that, what i'm saying is that letting your child travel to Lebanon to study just doesnt seem like the brightest move. Sure lebanon might be somewhat pro American, but your still in a country that has a shady history with ties to terroists groups, such as Hezbalah. Seems rather risky to me.
