Breaking Glass
You know that Squeel when you're through drilling and connecting the ends? You think "Geeze that could break glass!" Well it can! The Wife's Martini Glass collection is down by one.

Well, being a glassman, I have to say that that glass was doomed before you made that squeeling noise. The glass was not properly annnealed(cooled) and it had stress built up in it. The vibrations from the squeel, simply pushed it over the edge and forced the glass to relieve the stress. Kind of like the straw that broke the camel's back... Jake, if you have a pair of polarized glasses, take a peek at the stem with them on, you'll probably see lots of rainbows. Thats the glass molucules straining under the stress.
thats very cool though, and a nice goblet too.. Sorry for the loss.

I was hoping that you'd confirm my suspicions, Eben. Years ago I hung out with some glass blowers at RISD and we'd watch glass explode as it cooled outside the annealing oven. That glass was ultra thin and cut. Any flaw and I figured that it was a mini bomb. Just happy that it broke so neatly and didn't cut anyone.

Also, there could have been a chance that the cutting process on the lip could have introduced stress. IF the sawblade ran dry and heated up the lip as it was cut, it could have un-annealed its self. That might explain the perfect circular break though
