A cat and a string\a fish and a lure
I described this idea maybe 5 years ago on SOL but I thought I'd post it again since we have so many new people now , maybe they never heard it. I do claim that this is my original idea. I've heard many people repeat it since I posted it but I never saw anyone use this analogy before that.
I would liken fishing a lure to trying to get a cat to pounce on a string. most people have played the cat and string thing.. the amazing part is that sometimes the cat will go nuts and pounce as soon as it sees the string. Sometimes you can drag the string right over its head and it will not react. Doesn't that remind you of fishing?
Same fish , same lure , works one day but not the next.
The next analogy has to do with working the lures.
You drag that string over a cat and it might not budge. However , if you move it slow then jerk it , sometimes that little jerk will get the cat to strike. Sometimes it may take three short jerks on the string to get the cat to pounce. Doesn't that sound like fishing?
Sometimes just varying the way you work the lure will get strikes that another method will not.
The next example has to do with changing lures. Sometimes , you drag a thin string in front of the cat and it ignores it. Switch to a 1/2 inch wide piece of ribbon and the cat goes nuts attacking it. Doesn't that sound like fishing?
Its the same with lures.Sometimes a swimmer will be ignored while a popper gets hammered.
Anyway , I think its a good way to think about fishing. If you think about waht you have done to get a cat interested in a string , you will naturally move in the right direction to get fish to attack a lure.
Maybe this is too abstract for some but if you think about it , it does provide some insite.
