Distance Casting
any of you guys do any distance casting I just got back into throwing wood, surf fishing, again after some 40yrs of saltwater flyfishing. my sone gave me a 10'PENN power stick. heres a little of what happened yesterday.
NEED practice so I got out this morning took my granddaughter w/ me so she could play in the surf. there was NO WIND early morning so I could TEST my CASTS. also strug my outher spool w/ new power pro. seems the coating DOESN'T last long. only been a few week in the surf!!!!!!! WHATS UP W/THAT!!!!!! well made a few casts an found the rod wasent getting loaded properly. now I know why when I would cast SMOOTH an easy I could get better DISTANCE ( maby a breakaway cannon ) would help!!!! or MORE PRACTICE. I was useing a pencile popper this one I drilled an put molded eyes in an split rings an sinthetic hair on the tail hook, an re painted BLACK. it shot out an I started to retrieve an BAM it got hit. an then NOTHING THE PLUG WAS GONE ) you got to love thoes BIG BLUE FISH. it in his mouth or floating around out in the atlantic. I had no outher plug w/ me at the time THOUGHT id just fish that one all day I sat for a while smoked a cigar had a drink an watched my grandaught playing in the surf. the tied this day was EXTREEMELLLY LOW now it had turned an the HIGH should be nice an HIGH also. I headed back to my truck an got a an ATOMS figured if the blues were around they could take some of my old ones. there all chued up, an craked, falling apart. got back out an the tide was rushing over the jetty wall at the low points, man what a RIP!!
all this day BAIT fishermen were there trying to catch stripers an it was DEAD. half way out the OUTER SIDE of the jetty a TON of BIRDS were diving an you could see fish CRASHING every where. still way out. we were both hoping they would swing in an get close enought to cast to.
for some reason the just hung in that one spot. as we both stood waiting an watching. then it stoped no more action. an the they popped up a little closer. the guy that met out there said I think I can reach-em. he walked into the water climed on the rock an made a cast at good 100yds an BAM he was on. I was just down about 20yds from him on the beach. buy this time the surf was slapping me an DAM it felt GREAT getting wet. I said Ill give it a shot. first one was to far to my right. by this time he was realising his fish an I made another cast in his direction,an BAM FISH ON. all the bait guys were just watching they were OUT of REACH for them. I called my grandaught an gave her the rod. to reel him in,then I made another cast an told her to reel in BAM hooked up again. you should have seen her trying to reel in an hold the rod she had to put the butt in the sand an reel while I held the top section up. all in all it was great to see BLITZ of fish.an I HAPPY I could reach-em. there is something to be said for DISTANCE CASTING. I LOVE IT
