When are tuna close to shore ?

I`d like to try my hand at tuna, but with a 22ft Mako, can`t hit the canyons, if you know what I mean. I d be looking around the Point Judith, RI area.

There are some out there right now, off Newport. No keepers that close, but some fish. They're were some keeper sized fish from the fairway buoy east to the dump, but I don't have any reports for this week from that area.

I ran all over Newport yesterday AM before moving East almost all the way to Cuttyhunk and then back. In close one way, out deeper the other. Desolation. No tuna, no bait. Just a 4 pound bonito caught blind casting at a weedline/color break.

It's probably just the high pressure pushing the bait down, but we'll have to see.

As for your original question of when, it depends what species. If you're just talking about hardtails in general anywhere from mid-June up until around Thanksgiving. Primetime, depending on species, is August and September.

I`d be most interested in BFT. What is "generally" meant referring to how many miles, "close to shore", if I`m coming out of Point Judith ? Would they go into B I sound, stay off of Newport ?

Mudhole- Fairway- Claw- Fingers. East and South of BI within 25 miles, some within sight of the island. The weeks to come will be the time to try. Its not red hot right now.

I have a video of the North East Angling guys leaving PJ, and staying within 12 miles trolling, and jigging for top water tuna, (30-50 lbs.), in 125 ft of water. Is this less possible than winning the lottery ?

Last year, they came through thick from M to Cutty. They were here (0.5 - 5 miles off shore) very thick from mid july through mid aug. Didn't (hasn't?) happen(ed) this year. Some sparse schools, but nothing like last year.

Mud Hole & Acid Barge are good places to look this time of year. Both within 20-miles of Point Judith.
