skin jig question
I'm an absolute tyro when it comes to using them but they look like they could be "quite the berries" here.
No salted skins here so I'll skin my own fresh. Should they be salted to toughen them?
It seems obvious to me that to keep from ripping the skin off you need an outlet for the water. Should I cut the end of the tail completely off or should I just slit it in order to keep the eel "blown up" while it's in the water?
I'd also like to hear preferences. Rig it outside out or inside out?

Plug, first what's a tyro?
the skins are salted to preserve them. Keep them laid out in tupperware in the fridge.
I think after the skin is peeled off the eel there will end up being a hole or tear anyway just be careful around the vent area you don't want to rip it there.
I rig both blue side and black side and try both ways to see what the bass want. A trick I learned is use small cable ties(those plastic things called Zip ties) to hold the skins on, it saves time tying knots.
You are probably right , they could be quite the berries there. Just don't show them off or the cockroaches will swarm.

When there are Herring or Pogies around you may want to try the skins Blue Side out and only about 8 inches long, the fatter the better, to look like a Herring or Pogie. When the water gets up to 58 or above switch to the Dark Side out and leave them long.
When you skin the eel go slowly to the A**hole or Vent and be sure to cut the intestine, otherwise the skin will split from the vent to the tail and that spoils the movement of the eel.
When you get all rigged try each bait alongside you in the water. If the Tail don't wiggle then grasp the skin , in a rag is easiest, and split the tail by pulling on the two sides just for an inch to start.
Then test it alongside for wiggle.
Repeat the tail split, an inch at a time till you get the wiggle and the eel suddenly will appear to have come alive.
Now you got it right. It has to wiggle like it is alive, that is the challenge.
When you have mastered the eel so it swims and wiggles and fools that big momma bass, then you have really become a Bass Fisherman.
Any body can catch em on Live Bait.
It takes a real fisherman to rig a bait and fool the bass.
