Ended up with some 40 lb. test samples of Seagar flourocarbon line from the MSBA tourney, and the crap cost me fish. Had the hook break right off six times on our good fish on Sunday. Only managed to boat a couple shorts before the fish slacked with the tide. It would either wear right through or snap clean off. No knot problems just the stuff being absolute junk. We took the beating (and soaking) to make the run, get into some good fish, only to have the leader experiment ruin our fun. Oh well, what can you do besides go back to the tried and true?

Were the samples the new smaller diameter type? We have used Seagar(the original) for the last few years and find it a great product. We aquired a couple of cases of Stren Floro and found it to be much more rigid/brittle than the Seagar. You sure bluefish weren't present? we've done numerous "dock tests" and found that the 50lb braid will break before the knot or the 40 lb Seagar floro breaks.

I'll have to go back and look into the diameter question, and there may have been some blues, but we lost hooks to confirmed stripers. One of the leaders that wore right through was on a striper we got about fifteen feet from the boat. I'll be using mono again.

Don - I usually use the BiG Game mono leader but have been using Triplefish & Seaguar flouros this year. I find them less supple than the big game (never thought I'd call Big Game leader "supple") but I haven't had any more problems with them to speak off but I'm not seeing any improved hook-ups either....

You do need to be more carefull of your knots though...

I use 30# seagar for all my leaders and I haven't had any problems with it, so maybe they changed something.

It was never the knots. No pig's tails, just clean breaks. Maybe I got a bad batch, but I HATE losing a hooked fish. Especially, those that make my reel scream on a run to the deep water.

Maybe the floro helped you hook those big fish! I got some samples in my bag at the MSBA ceremony and it was a thinner diameter "improved version", green spool. I'll stick with the original. Bluefish can do a number on the WHOLE leader at times so we always check it before every cast when the fishing is hot. Seagar is a good product

Sorry to hear that. I got some of those Seaguar samples too, but haven't tried them out yet.

Might I suggest the Orvis fluro leader as an alternative to Seaguar? It's a bit pricier, but man that stuff is STRONG!

Try the Orvis Mirage Florocarbon in the 60-80lb rang when fishing Rhody rocks. Thats what i use and love the stuff. Other thing is it's $15.99 for a 25 yard spool. Less expensive by about $5 of the Seagur and other brands. I have tried them all, this is my favorite.

seaguar been realy good for me. i use it when pluging. its a great leader. i know thats all fisherwoman and bait caster. use to tie there deadly teaser rigs. and there catching some times two at a time. it might have been a bad spool. it happens.
