Fixed vs mechanicals... what a dilemma. I've never shot mechanicals but their are times I wish I had and I know a few guys that do shoot'um and wish they hadn't. This last deer is a good example of that. The arrow first went through the deers shoulder blade going through bone, not cartilage, then the broadhead disappeared into the spin. Even though I used caution I was surpirized when cleaning him that I felt the broadhead tip inside the rib cage. I shoot 3 blade muzzy 100 grain, they have always advertised to be "bad to the bone" and you can see why.

I have Grim Reaper 100 grain Mechanicals, I like how they fly. The one deer I took since I started bow hunting was a heart shot pass through at 30 yards.


I have'nt been out this year due to work, but I plan on sat, and opening day of shotgun.

Muzzy broadheads are the best in my opinion for fixed blades. I have killed ALOT of deer with that exact broadhead but now I shoot mechanicals (forget the kind). I have killed deer with them also. I think they both do the job well. Anarea that the muzzy's have a huge advantage is penetratration at bizarre angles from a tree stand. Nice job on the freezer filler. KR

My buddy from college has always shot the Thunderheads (125 gr - 3 bld). He has been using them since the early 80s. He averages at least 4-6 deer w/ his bow per yr between public, private & land owner permits in CT. He swears by them. He has also used them on black bear in Maine as well with great success!

When I was bowhunting I liked the Muzzy 100 gr - 3 blade because they flew the best with my particular bow, arrow rest and finger release. Practice blades are nice and easily switched out to sharp ones.

A well placed shot is the most important thing period. A wider wound area is just going to allow people take a shot they should pass on IMHO. I'm old school and probably would never switch to the mechanical broadheads.

Have you guys tried the slick tricks? In the past 4-5 yrs or so their hottest heads in the bow guru world. Its a fixed head that flies like field points. The muzzy ferrel is aluminum vs the slick trick is steel. Its a smaller head and a lot of other companies are catching on. So far the guys I know have nothin but good things to say about'um. For now I'll stick with whats been workin.
