Dissapointing

I went with Canalratt to our little slice of heaven yesterday morn. Got in my stand at 6:15am, it was a beautiful day, I don't remember if there was any wind. If there was I hardly noticed it. At around 7am I hear some rustling, looking to my right I saw two does coming down one of the runs. Another 20 seconds or so and here comes another doe and a fawn. About 30 seconds after that a nice buck came down the same run, he had his nose to the ground looking for a receptive mate. Unfortunately for me I was set up on another trail. The does immeadiately darted off about 30yards to the right, when the buckgot there. He was about 60 or so yards away, the area was thick, although there was one opening. As the buck offered me a perfect broadside shot, I beyed like a lamb to get him to stop. I was lined up perfect, so I took the shot. At the shot the buck jumped , and bounded away to the right where it was real thick. I advised Tony of the situation. I thought I had hit him. About2 minutes went by and I saw the does and the buck at the edge of the cover. He was walking too good, at this point I thought I had missed. I told Tony on the radio. He made a beeline for the front of the property, to try and get a shot for himself or push the buck back to me. Needless to say the deer move off into the thicket. After about 10 minutes I hear a great crashing, and the buck goes flying by a warp speed. A few minutes later Tony showed up from where the buck came. I advised him as to where the buck was when I shot him. He went there as I was coming down. He observed that my slug hit a sapling, that was not really visible from the stand. It was between the buck and the stand. Later on in the day I was heading out to the truck, and while I was waiting for Tony I checked out a houselot on the edge of the property. Just as I was nearing the foundation, I jumped three that were in a thicket to the right.

Needless to say I got up this morning. The rain was bearly a drizzle when I got in my stand , and was actually more of a mist. The wind was variable. As the dark gave way to false dawn, the raing picked up a little. Then came a couple of lightning shots. I flew down out of the tree. It poured for about20 minutes. My buddy and I decided to slowly stalk. We jumped on deer walking through a swamp. There was no time for a shot in the thick stuff. I called it a season. Would have made three years in a row with a deer for me.

There is always next year

Hey what can you do? This year and last year were maybe my two worst in the woods in a long time. Now I'm tempted to bring the bow back out for a few weeks but we'll see.
