Cheap security camera setup?
That records.
Preferably on it's own little hard drive as my computer is Never on.
Need to keep an eye on my stuff for a while.

Been doing a bunch of research into this lately - mostly because I'm an untrusting, grumpy bastard who believes far too many people now-a-days are scumbags... but anyway....
O.D. Mike has you on the right track. For an entry-level system, you're looking at $350-400 for the DVR (Recording Unit) with a couple of cameras. I have a catalog at my office with some units that have iPhone apps that go with them so you can check in from your phone. I'll try and remember to post the website tomorrow.
When getting a system, make sure you keep in mind your application. Are you using it outdoors; is there always a light or do you need a quality UV Camera for nighttime use, how much detail do you need, etc.
One of the systems I'm looking into can be set up to send you a text message/email if it detects motion. For example, there is absolutely no reason someone should be in my front hall. Because the misses and I go to the Cape for a lot of weekends, I'm thinking about putting a camera up there and set it to text me if any motion is detected. If I receive a text, I can log into the system with my phone and take a look. You can turn the system on/off with your phone to avoid unnecessary texts.
If I don't post an update with the website by tomorrow, shoot my a private message as a reminder.

Great thanks. Id like to put a few on the front of the house and maybe one on the boat while it's down at the slip.

Security Camera Systems and Home Security Cameras from Security Cameras Direct
This company has some decent options. The 4-camera turn key option is probably the best and most affordable way to go relative to other starter kits. You'll need to connect the system to the internet to use the free iPhone application.

What do you want to do, spy on the neighbor?

Given the diversity of the human species, there is no “normal” human genome sequence. We are all mutants.

Say what?? You painting plugs without a respirator again?
The basic 4 Camera turn-key system comes with (4) 65' IR Day/Night cameras. I'm not sure if you can online, but over the phone you can upgrade individual components. I'd probably upgrade at least one of the cameras I'd be using outdoors in order to be able to get a high quality face image.
