Sundowner - yes, you can use them fishing from the beach - but best to find areas of beach that are likely to hold fish.

What John said. Plus go at night! Usually 1 hour before and after the high tide. Look for structure. Points, holes, white water usually means a few fish will be waiting for bait getting all churned up. Big moons = big tides which usually means more fish.

eels are a universal bait and can be fished anywhere... your method of presentation may vary .. but the fact that bass.. especialy big ones eat eels ANYWHERE.. is not lost to anyone familure with fishing them...they are my primary weapon for night tides... but I've taken some real slobs under the noon day sun... mainly in the fall...

Very true. Some nights they will only take the pencils. Recently, it has been fish to fish, and I've been changing sizes and retrieve every few casts.

Eels are as close to cheating as you can get without explosives.

It's not that they always work, but it's just that when there are fish in front of you they will ALMOST always take them. Sometimes if there's a lot of fire in the water, you'll get the fast pick-up-and-drop deal... but you can very often combat that by fishing a dead or nearly dead eel like a plastic worm in freshwater, in other words let it sit on the bottom for several seconds or as much as 30 seconds or even more and then move it a few feet and wait again. If you're still getting the same treatment reduce the test of your leader and fish a very long leader--10-15 feet tied with an albright. I've always thought that the reason they drop the eel is that they see your line lighting the fire up, if you drop from 50 or 60 down to 30-pound test there's a lot less diameter to ignite those little critters, on top of that, using the long leader eliminates the terminal tackle and extra knots which, I've always felt, ups your chances and I've seen it work many times.

As for fishing eels on a sandy beach... like the others have said Bob, you can't pick a place where stripers swim that an eel will not work as long as the conditions don't rule them out.

Yes Paul. I've fished with an experienced eel guy when fish are around..short version is I've never caught using eels. Many many attempts and I'm doing everything "right" but fish avoid my offering. In two years, dozens of times out..no fish. Its just how it is.

Eels are the easiest thing. Cast, sink, slowly retrieve.

Sometimes you speed up (a little), usually you don't. There are some nuances but for basic stick someone one the water's edge to catch a night bass casting - the eel is it, up there with chunk squid

For some it an be a confidence thing too
