Question for ya
Yesterday for the first time in 5 years, I had a reel spooled. I always buy spools of line (usually get the 1pounders from Mike) and spool myself but yesterday I had no line in the right size. I stopped by a tackle shop that I wanted to try out as it was new to me to pick up some small jig heads and line and generally hunt around. The fellowing running the shop had not received his line spools in and didn't have anything in the right sizes available so he offered to spool it with 10 pound. I pretty much assumed it would be about $6 as the last time I filled a reel was 5 years ago, a 8500SS Penn with 20 pound Big Game for about 10-11 bucks. I think I have just about always lined my sppols myself and maybe had it done a half dozen times my entire life. Anyway, I was suprised when it cost $10 bucks to fill that reel with 10# Big Game... Is that a typical price? Probaly 230 yards of line?
Thanks,
John

Sounds like they charged you about 4 cents a yard. I haven't had a spool filled by a shop in ages, but the last time I did, Red Top charged 2 cents a yard. That was about the going rate, I thought. But, we're talking at least the late 80s here, maybe even longer. The only times I've had them spool line on in a shop since was when I bought a new reel and they offered to do it for free.

John:
The going price in our area is 3 cents per yard for mono and 10 cents for fireline and other super braids. Hope that is helpful. BTW from April 15th to May 15th we will be spooling mono for 1 cent a yard at the shop http://www.weekapaug.com for Surf Fishing club members (any club in New England). Any one from your Board is also welcome.

You had me going there for a minute, lol. Thought big fish, spooled meaning hard-long run, but where this time of year, especially since I didn't see you on the river today ha-ha. That sounds like a lot of money, especially since I rarely fill a spool anyway. I typically put backing on a reel and it stays put for years and the amount of backing is based on the line test and yards of fresh line I want available on that particular reel.
I order bulk spools from BPS, Cabelas or Northern Bass Supply and spool my own as required. Saves a lot of money and time, size I can do it at my leasure. Tight lines.

I was just suffering sticker shock. The last couple springs I've gone down to Mikes and picked up a one pound spool of 20 Big Game and one of 15 BG. I usually will have a 1/2 or 1/4 of 12 too for the very early season. It's just been that long since I had spool lined that I was blown over. Don, that's a damned good deal, especially after what I did yesterday...

Big Game or Ande line in 10lb test goes around .01 per yd.
Trilene Big Game 1Lb spool, 10lb test there is 6000 yds Line . we sell a spool for $24.00.(plus a $2 cash back cupon). final cost $22.00 .If you buy the spool we install it for free each time you bring it back.
I can't see him charging .04 per yd he must have made a mistake.
So if you figure at .04 per yd he is making $240. per spool.

I really though that was high but it would make sense why alot of people reline their reels every other season, usually after breaking of on a nice fish... Right Schoolie Monster :P ?
Speaking of Big Game, anyone hear about that Big Game Supreme, specially formulated for saltwater, low-vis, washes your dishes and changes your oil and all that propaganda ?

John: Looked at and got samples of the Supreme at the last dealer show I was at, looks and feels pretty good. It is about 30% more money. Big Game 1 pound spool is $31/$32 MSRP. Supreme is $45. Here is a link to the Berkley page, have a look.

I did see and get some samples of the new Yozuri line. I'm very impressed with it. They have fused nylon with fluorocarbon, very supple, looks like the old Royal Bonnell that Browning made(light brown color). Supposed to be highly abbrasive resistance and a good cold weather line. Expensive though, 1 pound spool of 20lb(2900 yds) about $75/$79 MSRP. Let you know how it is, will try it in the next couple of weeks.

Yes XL is $52.99 MSRP for a 1lb spool 3000 yds. However, berkley is having some good rebate programs through April 30, 2001. You can visit their site for details. The promos may be on their
http://www.purefishing.com site.

Thanks, Don... your new site is looking good. I'm not getting the browser errors like last time and I know how it can be difficult to keeps those errors from happening. Only thing I noticed was " We shop will be open regular business hours on April 1st " on the front page...
Later,
John
