Looking for info on used 4 wheel drive for light use

I live on the cape so I don't need to do a lot of driving but would like a second car that is a "real" 4 wheel drive to hit the Scorton Creek lot, (my fiesta has to park in the 2 spaces ouside the lot) Sandy Neck, Race point etc.. Thinking 2008 Explorer or earlier 4Runner or a Jeep (not a Wrangler, done that and want a few more inches in the wheelbase and creature comfort). Thinking in $ 9K to 11K range depending on mileage, condition etc. I believe all these have 4 wheel drive that would work in these driving situations. Does anyone also have experience with the 4 wheel drive in a Ford Escape, RAV4 or Jeep Liberty or anything in this next size down vehicle? Are they suitable for beach driving or not? As my screen name implies I am Hardcore from Shore but know nothing about 4 wheel drives. All thoughts will be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bill
