Now I am the nursemaid
Dani had surgery yesterday for a detached retina that developed to the point of emergency surgery Sunday. She is home and good after going back into Mass Eye and Ear for one day post op check up at 0730 this morning. I have ordered and rented a few things to make her more comfortable as she needs to be face down, staring at the floor for a week! So after being totally spoiled for all these years and been nursed through the knee replacement from hell, it is my turn to take care of the Queen.... Amazing what you can learn about a subject (detached retina) in a very short time...
Oh and I get her mother too!

Oh boy
I am still goin thru this same thing
It has been nearly a year
After 3 retina surgeries the retina is good. Can’t see much for you develop a cataract after retina surgery.
Cat act act surg next Tuesday. After that hoping to be like Steve Austin
Is a long process Ross. It sucks. I had a partial detach. The length of the whole recovery just kind of wears on ya.
They make donut type pillows for face down. Then she’ll probably transition to a side hat doc says.

Thanks guys.
Beamie I rented a unit from facedownsolutions dot com yesterday for a week. Came today. I have learned a lot about this quickly... like zero to overload in two days. When it happens you have to move fast and put most everything else on full stop for a bit.... Wishing you a good recovery. She is happy just to have the first night over with.
I see this as being quite different from something like my knee because in your eye/head it consumes your every waking moment with your sight and discomfort... Much respect for what others deal with.

Speedy recovery to Dani. I've had both eyes operated on a couple of times. No fun.

You got this, she’s in good hands.
eye issues are freaky.
I’ve been dealing with a banged up left eye for almost 2 years. Had a retinal vein occlusion, basically my eyeball had a stroke. Caused a macular edema that won’t stay down, I go in for treatments every 7-8 weeks. Freaked me the f*** out when it happened, but sight has been steadily improving.

The things we take for granted.... If I could have only made my younger self understand.... You younger guys, take note. To be able to get up in the morning and just "go" without any hinderance is a miracle I just did not appreciate enough.

My sister is an ophthalmologist. She found my partial detachment. Retina not being her specialty she turn my over to a doc in her practice who is.
She said if you have floaters you have to get them checked. Usually nothing but COULD be the signs of retina tearing

Most of the time they're just another reality of getting old. But when I discovered one, I still scheduled an eye exam.

My mother told me getting old is not for the faint hearted.
Friends of mine have spent the week face down and not drinking.
I’ve been lucky to only have cataracts and prostrate issues, both easily resolved.
I’ll be dealing with my wife after she has her hips done in the next year or two.

Cataracts are not that bad. Did you know that half of Japanese surgeons have cataracts ?

First off, thank you all for the well wishes.
We saw the surgeon in MEEI Boston yesterday for check up nine days post op and he saw exactly what he wanted and expected to see in terms of healing. So that is great. The gas bubble remains in the eye for a number of weeks, so she is still basically blind in that eye. Very blurry. One finger or three look the same to her at this point. See him again in four weeks, but in a suburban office. No driving, can sleep on side now but not on back. Allowed to work at desk on computer without restrictions beginning Monday(besides not being able to see out of left eye...) He also did a thorough examination of her right eye as she had some floaters in it the day after surgery and that understandably freaked her out. Some of the fluid is pulling away from retina but he took a benchmark and will measure again in four weeks.
The week was rough on her, but she was a trooper. I will continue to happily be driving Miss Daisy and her daughter Dani for the next month. She is happily planning a food shopping outing on Saturday morning early and Palm Sunday mass at 0730 service for me to get them to for immediate outings. Thankful here for having world class medical facilities less than an hour away!

Thank you, Paul. We are good here. Blessed, fortunate, lucky, all the above. I drove her to do some grocery shopping and two other stops. She managed well still blind in the left eye. I see her occasionally waving a hand in front of the eye to test what she can see. She is trying to do anything the doctor said she could do. I got a good one...
I thought about you too the other day.... Wishing you were closer so I could hand over a milkcrate full of mahogany cutoffs for plugs.
