We fished with our plugs in a good ole white bucket, and wore $5 rain jackets, 3 rebels and a few jigs. Now look at all the choices a newbie has? I wouldnt no where to start! If you go with all the options it would cost you $3500 just to get the basic equipment. There is too much bs. That doesnt explain dumb questions, but I think information overload is a factor!

Well, Jimmy, that a good point. I started like you did. White bucket a set of rubber waders from Bennys and a $5 rain jacket. You had white leadheads jigs and maybe an Atom Popper and a Rebel.
I am not criticizing the questions. Just as Bill said, you can do the searches and find out the basics to start with. I don't have a problem with questions that are thoughtful and not easily solved. It's the redundent, "what line should I use" questions that I take exception to.
Do you see where I am coming from?

They have made it that way because thats what they like...
I have seen the guys you talk about...Many times, they look like idiots...Dressed to the nines with every brand name everything, spent thousands before they caught there first fish or think they fish better because somone else tells them to buy this wetsuit , wear a belt full of boga grips, pliers, hand held radios, red necklights etc, vs reels, portable borometers etc...they look like fools out of ice station zebra! They are at total war with fish! he men who have the latest and greatest of what they were told to buy! yet they have no clue what the wind is doing...oops, Forgot that one!
Then the guy walks off the beach in hip boots and grundens hauling a 40 over his shoulder! Its hilarious..
These guys dont even want to touch a fish anymore! Now a boga grip is the way to land a fish! They do all of this mind you to match wits with an animal that has a brain the size of a pin head..and all that lame gear is needed to partake in this battle of real men. They exole themselves of how "hard" they fished all night to land that bass....how reaching for the boga almost had them lose ballance while they waded out 6 million yards to climb up on a rock like a baffoon to master the beast..(buying a boat is smarter in this case and can acually prolong life, but thats another story)
here is whats next...Soon there will be another gadget for there lame looking belts full of all that useless gear...It will be a med kit for fish...It will have anit-biotic shots to give the fish to treat a host of illness's they may have, they may contain narcotics to lesson the pain and suffering they caused on the fish along with this portable oxygen to get there fish back in good shape...
When you meet these people they walk around like they are holding this huge secret and you cant dare ask where they caught there large bass....Gimmie a break, as for me I could give a good cheet where anyone catches, let alone some wet behind the ears kid thinking he has pulled the wool over the eyes of a guy who has done it a million times...They dont talk, they just smirk, the whispers begin, "hey did you hear how good those guys did those two weeks in August" wow there sharpies..They have all that gear you know, they know what there doing...
Fishing is not that complicated...its all a matter of putting in the time

I don't have a problem with questions, just stupid questions. if someone wants to know how to tie a dropper loop, fine, that's a tough knot to tie correctly and not something you will find easily.
When they start asking what rod to buy and what reel to put on it, I respectfully submit that they should do some research on their own. Those questions have been answered 100 time.
Yes, the Board is hear to share knowledge but there is also a line where the majority of the population is not being served by the questions asked by a few. Just my opinion.

Be carefull, I just got hung for saying the same thing basically! However, good post paul

sorry but there is no way in hell man will ever understand women . aint going to happen . go right back to day one with adam and eve . adam said ( being causious ) "remember what God said about eating the apples on the forbidden tree " and even knowing the outcome eve said ( with abandon ) "to hell with that " and ate one so did adam but only after being called a sissy by eve . now eons later man runs with abandon and a woman is more causious . why? she bears the scar every month and they dont want the next plague ( even worse ) to come their way . and according to my lovely wife of 24 years " there isnt anything that could be worse " .

2 questions
Why is it that a lot of people don't seem to have fun when they fish?
Why is it that lots of people are always worried about what other people are doing when it comes to fishing. The in with the in crowd or you don't rate syndrome.

How comes sometimes after a rough night of drinking and bad food you can't tell the difference between a wet and dry fart so you just hold it until you can make it to a toilet sometimes only to be disappointed ? Man I hate that.

If I for one can answer a (somewhat) serious question asked on this Thread: addressed by Bill & DJ particularly... the Goog Belt- Gaff Wearing Caster!
I am catch & release minded to the 99th power... that's just my choice! And yes, I catch my fair share-- every year, not just last! And, yes, I fish Surf mostly-- almost always using spinning gear if plugging or eeling-- & thus VS my choice-- for 12+ years now, again not lately! (Although, yes, I've broken them down in- field use many different ways in all that time... but I still love 'em today!)
But: as to the perennial wearing of the Belt Gaff (& lots of other necessary/ helpful/ needed accessories on my trusty/ beloved surf- Belt? )... even if in a spot too high-- or in the water-- for it's use, etc...
FIRST... THAT one always wears a belt- gaff... does not mean he ever uses it! (not that there's anything wrong with doing so if you are taking a fish to eat)...
Mine is there for the one- in a thousand trip where I'm face- to- face with my "50+"... probably in treacherous terrain! I might decide then & there to kill & keep her... or I might lip- gaff her & release... depending! (On too many variables to know what I'll do 'till that moment!) But that Gaff IS on my Belt always... though I've not ever once used it yet on my own Bass! (Yes, I did so for friends who were keeping theirs & needed my help landing it... Again, I'm all for a Surfcaster killing a Bass if putting it to good use!).
Yes, I too do land & release all my Bass (& Blues too) by (usually gloved) hand! I Lip even 30lb.+ Bass no problem! (unless she has a face- full of trebles!)... & release in- water usually! I would NEVER use a Boga on a Bass of any size: not because they're "uncool"/ non- traditionalist to use... but because they KILL BASS TO BE RELEASED! (Or at least up the release mortality very significantly! Think about it: 20- 30+ lbs. of weight supported by a living creatures' jaw?... & then it has to feed again soon afterward, or eventually weaken & die?
SECONDLY... The surf- belt Gaff I wear (by the "Surfcaster"-- great!)... is perm.- attached to my (main) belt! Securely with metal frame & point- rest... totally safe!). It is a permanent fixture on my Belt! -- I can't say, "oh, I'm fishing too high above water today so I'll leave my gaff off my belt, etc..." Yes, it's always there when I'm fishing the Surf... for one POSSIBLE use!...
But: see me with it all the time as you may... & wonder what you will about it/ me!...
...for over a decade now I've carried it every minute I surf- cast, & still (on MY fish) I've never used it once yet! But I hope to need to some day not too distant! And... If you're pulling a Cow you want to keep up the rocks next to me some day yourself... well, you might be glad too I always carry my Gaff!

Just my 2 cents on this. I think that hooking and landing a fish puts alot more stress on the jaw than the boga grip does. It only takes a few seconds to get the reading on the scale.

Not to HiJack, or put words in Steve's mouth, but the argument against bogas is the stress on the fish when hanging OUT of the water; in the water, fighting it, the body weight of the fish isn't handing from jaw. Especially with larger fish.

If ya wear a cap backwards when fishing, do ya try it on in the store frontwards first and then spin it around when ya get home or do ya try it on in the store backwards to make sure it fits and looks ok backwards ?
