Ok, one more question...Did you use a forstner bit to make a recess for the belly grommet? They look really clean.

no, i just used a regular drill bit to counter-bore the belly a little.

So those are actually the smaller versions of the Gibbs Polaris. Close to the 2-1/4 oz. Gibbs not the 3-1/2 mostly used on the canal. With that deep a cut in the face they might dig in too deep and torpedo rather than the shallow cup face of the standard Gibbs which was designed to stay up on the surface and put up a big spray rather than a deeper gurgle and thus the torpedo factor. The way Stan designed them was for the shallow cup to make the plug put up a good spray on the surface but also when a bass missed or swirled you can just ease back slowly with very light tension and make it swim gently side to side. A deeper cup will not allow you to do that. I think they are too nice to fish so that being the case send the red/yellow ones and blue/white ones to me and I will add them to my collection for safe Keeping!

TDF i bought it as part of a 5 pc set for just four bucks. i doubt they would last long using hardwoods, but they work with the cedar i'm using.

Flap, when you say smaller version do you mean same length, different weight? I've heard of gibbs' canal specials that were heavier, but were they the same length

The angle cut is the same, but i left the heads a little longer, to give me more room for the eyes....i didn't even think about how it would affect the action.
Sometimes i TRY to get the deep, low sounding BLUUURP rather than the quick, splashy pop....i think the low sound helps me catch (non-blitzing) fish at times, for the change-up if nothing else.
The top is a small polaris, below it was the plug i copied, the one that weighs just under 2 3/8 oz the bottom is one i made - but it could be flaps, if he promises to fish it and not let it sit on the rack......unless it gets to stay close to gibbs #1

I'm lookin at a catalog that says the 3.5 Gibbs polaris is 6 3/8" long.For some reason I think its longer than that.I also think they make em as small as 5/8 of a oz.along with a 1 an a 1.5 oz models.when the water gets big an the pencils start to dig to much I put the polaris on an have had pretty good succes.Like the say 3 pops an a pause.
