Take it easy.... anyone with half a brain and a good map can locate almost every accessible herring that exists. THe runs tend to be spotty for the last 10 years, some years good, others not so.... The fact of the matter remains that if everyone followed the regs and only kept their limit, their would be plenty to go around in all those OBVIOUS runs. GS has been a mob scene for years, do a little research and you can find plenty of brooks and other runs ignored by the hordes. Have fun netting them, keepin them alive from the run to the truck, the truck to the hold, the hold to the livewell. If you fish from shore, add in the fun of keepin them alive in yer converted shore baitwell attched to the tether on yer moms stolen laundry basket..... They do make excellent fertilizer though when left in the 5 gallon a little too long. Throw a 6 inch storm shad and fish it correctly instead, itll catch more fish for way less effort.

Put this to Bed
Since I started this stupidness, I guess I would like to finish it. I really never considered the amount of feedback that would come from one little innocent post about a 1000 year old herring run.
The true fact of the matter is that the rec fishing guys take far less herring than the commercial lobster guys do using the herring for bait in their traps.
I know a run in Tiverton that has the lobster guys lined up everyday that it's legal, filling these big blue barrels with herring. Not 12 or 24 but hundreds.
The recreational fisherman is not responsible for the demise of the Herring any more than they are responsible for the lack of menhaden. I agree that the commercial guys have a god given right to earn a living but I think that everyone has over reacted to the posting of the herring run in North Kingston.
That being said, I apologize to anyone that was offended by my post a couple of days ago and I promise you, my 40 years fishing of knowledge will never see the light of day as a post again.

I had to a couple more comments to Piemma's closing remarks. Increasing recently is a major concern that many of the river herring (alrewifes and bluebacks) are being collected in the pair trawlers targeting sea herring. Some reports point to the schools mixing or at least in close proximity. The finest commercial electronics in the world are not likely to differentiate between a river herring and a sea herring in massive schools of fish. This is something that is beginning to get a lot of attention and deserves a lot more.
OK - back to closed

Squiddler & M^2 - welcome to S-B.... Squiddler, first the "Spot" thing being talked here has a lot less due to Herring and Herring Runs as it does about fishing spots in general. The simple fact with spots in general is that there is a sheeeet load of pressure on them and we are slowly losing some of this access. That's all. There area a thousand places to read or talk about spots in reports, I just think there are way too many.
Yes, it is a contentious issue to talk or not to talk online about spots and reports. But I came to the conclusion a couple years ago that they are best left to a phone call or PM between friends or with an open ear at your local tackle shop. Not to be blabbered around by someone boasting on a site, drumming up biz for the local shop or charter, or even when someone is making a conciencious (sp?) effort to help out another angler. On the latter, a simple PM or e-mail works fine, or maybe even an invite to meet up with someone and take them fishing.

yep... Sadly, those that take them for the roe will beyotch about it and say that if anglers took less than there would be better runs and more to take upstream...
Strpr3 - if its that ironic than he must have spelled it wrong - missing an "e"... BTW - welcome to S-B
