the Raven is on the hunt...the game is afoot Watson
Orange juice, researchers found, boosted the levels of citrate in the urine and reduced the crystallization of uric acid and calcium oxalate — the most frequently found ingredient in kidney stones.
But lemonade did not increase the levels of citrate, an important acid neutralizer and inhibitor of kidney stone formation.
"One reason might be the different constituents of various beverages," Dr. Odvina said.
For instance, the citrate in orange and grapefruit juice is accompanied by a potassium ion while the citrate in lemonade and cranberry juice is accompanied by a hydrogen ion. Ions of hydrogen, but not potassium, counteract the beneficial effects of the high citrate content.

for the benefit of others
more info:
Your chance of developing another stone is greatly reduced if you: - drink plenty of fluid - at least two litres daily (water is readily available, no prescription needed, very cheap)
- take care not to eat too much calcium. You should eat no more than 300 (big cup)ml of milk + 50 g of cheese + either an ice cream or ½ cup of yogurt every day
- watch your oxalate intake. You should eat no more than one serving of rhubarb + six slices of beetroot + two servings of either silverbeet, spinach or puha every day
- avoid excessive salt intake as it increases urine calcium excretion
- eat meat in moderation. Meat is the most important cause of increased calcium and uric acid excretion. Excessive intake (very common amongst men) should be avoided
- dietary assessment and modification must be done by a dietician. People must understand the reasons for the dietary advice and be encouraged to make a life long commitment
- drugs may be advised for specific conditions.

yeah i wondered
puha wtf is it?
i been reading about the importance of magnesium
total dietary changes... i need to switch over to more shellfish
now... to take advantage of the magnesium in them.
did ya hear that clammah?
red meats out... the key is limiting the uric acid from combining with
oxilic acid to form a stone... can't even spell i'm so tired...
i have many of the vitamin therapies selected.. and a huge
working plan for my war... move over ---- Rumsfeld...
goin to home depot to get bottled water (done)
buying lemons grapefruit (ruby red) and O.J. (done)
reducing my dairy intake to lower amount (done)
buying 20 pounds of carrots for juicing (made some) vitamin A
never eating chocolate again (done) bye bye oxacilic acid ..
will be making chlorophyll drinks because
it's high in magnesium
aloe vera water remedy (bought it )
golden seal (always used it)
catching and eating more fish (excuse to have fun)
so since i'll be consuming mass quantities (conehead lol)
of liquids...8 ounces per hour i'll be peeing like a race horse
and since fats water soluable...bye bye fat cells meaning
i'll loose desired weight as well... sounds like a plan.

JPI
puha appears to be a name for a green vegetable that grows in new zealand...
it probably has the same compound in it that spinach does.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
i bought like 40 bucks worth of vitamins today
kiwi -fruit for enzymes/ plus fresh vit. C
drank some thick super food green beverage chock full of spirulina
had fresh (frozen ) sugar snap peas for green food tonight with
some jumbo scallops (for magnesium) and steak fried taters
followed by pineapple yogurt over fresh cut pineapple.
basicly the kick your kidneys ass dinner special.
so...with that kind of appetite .... i'm doing fine
but i won't be drinkin beer for a long time.

Raven,
When you say "to the hospital to have it smashed" are you saying their going to hit it with sound waves to try and break it up or are you going in for surgery to have it balsted with the laser?

Lithotripsy only has a 70% chance of working unless the stone is still in your kidney, then it's almost 100% effective. I have to bring my kid in for another x-ray to see if it's moved at all since last week. It hadn't a week after her first treatment, and it looks like she'll need a second shock. The stone is in her ureter and blocking the flow from her kidney so she has a nephrostomy bag in place to drain it. I'm not trying to hijack your post, I'm just letting you know that we're going through the same thing here and I'm pulling for you to get through this quickly as I can see how it's effecting my daughter and nobody should have to go through that kind of pain for that long. Good luck and a speedy recovery to you.

yeah it worked fine
and it got me off the damned percasets....
which for me<- anyways .....is like being stumbling drunk...
i don't like them,(percs) but they are preferable to the pain...
funny thing ..tramadol is a pain killer...
but it doesn't act like a narcotic does. (correction) i'm still learning.
and thanks jklett .... yeah, the stone is still in my kidney,,,
first time (last april was an overnight affair) i had no idea what it was
this time it was a week long battle....

Raven.
You got that right about the collapsing funnel, total pain in the @$$.
Do what I did after about 1 hour of using the funnel, throw it away and get a clear bottle so you can see anything inside. Just rinse out after use and your good to go, also no mess using a bottle compared to the screen.
With the bottle you not only save the stone(s) but you also have a urine sample ready for the lab techs.
Chocolate is definately a no no as well as soda, but not off the list for life, just use it in moderation.

The chocolate and soda thing I have no problem with(we limit that stuff as it is), it's the no spinach and nuts that bothers me. She doesn't eat meat(except for chicken) and gets a lot of her protien from nuts and peanut butter. And unlike most kids, she loves spinach. She saw a nephrologist(sp?) today and she's going to help work out a diet plan as soon as they know exactly what caused the stone.
As to the POS collapsible cup, see if they won't give you a regular funnel with the screen. We got one for home and one for school from the urologist just by asking. If all else fails, you could always line a regular funnel with cheesecloth or something like it to catch the stone.
Since the stone is in your kidney still, the lithotripsy should do the trick on the first shot . She's going for her second blast on Wednesday morning and they sounded pretty confident about it this time. At least it has moved some since the first treatment. Unfortunately no dice on the Tramadol, the doc said nothing stronger than tylenol since she's so small(only 48#). Nothing worse than seeing your kid in so much pain and not being able to help her feel better . I hope you get better soon. I know the whole ordeal has taken at least 10 years off my life and I'm not even the one with the stone. Keep us up to date on what's going on, I've been telling my kid that someone else is going through the same thing as she is and it seems to help her feel better knowing she's not alone with it. She sends her wishes for a speedy recovery.

jklett,
Tell you're little one we're all pulling for her and wishing her success on the next try for the stone, there'll be a little something extra in the prayers tonight for her to get a little pain relief from above.
She sounds pretty tough for a little one, just tell her that yes it hurts alot right now but just think how good its going to feel once its out.
Tight lines and prayers.

thank your sweet daughter for me....for her get well wish and tell her i sent her a get well soon hug....from Raven, she sounds so sweet...
48 pounds... wow... she's quite young....yeah!....for tramadol, even in a reduced dosage for children....so thats tough... hopefully she love's Orange juice . unfortunately Nuts are one of those foods that are high in oxalate so she needs to expand her protien choices beyond chicken somehow.
maybe the nutritionist.....can suggest a protien powder to mix with yogurt as a supplimental source of protien. Also remind your daughter
that she has taste buds on her tounge that are completely replaced
every 7 years so that her taste preferences will change as she gets older. One of the fun things about life is experimenting with different foods to see if you might like them when prepared in different ways.
i did by the way get some nifty funnels from the nurse yesterday after going to the outpatient pre -testing for blood work.

How did everything go? Did they get the stone? Are you feeling better?
My daughter's stone is finally gone! They took out the nephrostomy tube today and the hole should heal up in about a week and she'll be good as new! We have a good pediatric nephrologist that she's seeing and she'll work out a plan to try and prevent any more stones from forming. Our lives can finally start to get back to normal here.

it's been painful....but tolerable.
that sonic sound stuff: really beats you up...man...
everything was real sore internally...not bruised
but close to it...actually the stone had dropped into my bladder
and thus far not much of any fragmented pieces have been collected.
today: i busted ass in the garden getting ready for the final
roto till....
and i have several bushells of potatoes to dig up next.
she can have red potatoes but not the white...i've read.
and thats for me as well. I bought 5 pounds of carrots to
juice ...and that beta caroteen really delivers some healing
power to your whole system.
i haven't taken any medication now for two days
to clean out my system. i'm slowly regaining my strength.

too much to read . but the # one reason for kidney stones is dehydration . drink 2 liters of water daily and you may not ever get another . Although 50 percent have return bouts with stones . I just got over a bout myself in August . 1 small stone that hung up half way out . I doubled over after standing up to plug my laptop into one of our network switches then it was 3 days to pass the damn thing . I have had many things happen in my life also that have caused much pain but nothing like this . I litteraly crawled into my house . good thing my new truck is an auto , If it was a standard I never would have made it home . 911 would have been called and then brought me to the hospital .

F that
i'd rather drink 2 liters of BEER than be constantly
peeing all damn day from drinkin that much water.
i tried that ....and i had to pee every 20 minutes...
in fact: now that i think of it... time for an ale.
you should learn to speed read...
