it looks like the swells are already nearby.
SOUTHEAST SWELL ASSOCIATED WITH HURRICANE FABIAN HAS REACHED THE
OUTER COASTAL WATERS NEAR NANTUCKET. A SOUTH TO SOUTHEAST SWELL OF
4 TO 6 FEET WILL AFFECT THE SOUTHERN WATERS TODAY AND TONIGHT...AND
MAY PRODUCE RIP CURRENTS AND HIGH SURF ON SOUTH FACING BEACHES OF
MASSACHUSETTS AND RHODE ISLAND.
i love fishing before a hurricane hits! i have some awesome pics of me and my dad fishing watch hill when i was about 10 as a hurricane was coming ashore. you can see little me casting into what looks like a wall of water coming right at me. the fishing was AWESOME that day! the waves were well over 10' high. white water was everywhere, as were the bass.

The heave should start late tommorrow on the Cape. The bite should be ON at night. I might have to spend some time on the sand.

Widespread showers and thunderstorms were continuing to affect the outer-waters to south of Block Island...to the waters south of Marthas Vineyard. Dangerous lightning...torrential rain and wind gusts to 30 knots will pose a risk to any mariners. Some of these thunderstorms will move into Nantucket Island through 3 PM. This may cause localized street flooding...so motorists should use caution.
Forecast as of 10:22 am EDT on September 4, 2003
Synopsis For Massachusetts And Rhode Island Coastal
A warm front will lift north across the waters this afternoon. A cold
front is then expected to cross the waters tonight. High pres will
dominate the weather across the coastal waters through Mon. A
dissipating cold front may affect the waters from the north Sunday
night. High seas...including swells from Hurricane Fabian...will

I think that forecast is for a 2-4' wind chop...the swell is expected to be 7' with 7-10 waves on south and east facing beaches.
I think I will hang out on the lee side of the island this weekend. (but surf fish in the crashing suds southside at night...... :-)
Off shore could get too snotty where I was planning to go...we will have to see how this shapes up. If it is only a 4' swell that is nothing.

...SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TAUNTON MA 610 AM EDT FRI SEP 5 2003
... LARGE SWELLS FROM DISTANT HURRICANE FABIAN ARE BEGINNING TO AFFECT THE SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND COASTAL WATERS...
HURRICANE FABIAN IS FORECAST TO CONTINUE TO REMAIN WELL OUT TO SEA THIS WEEKEND... PASSING WELL EAST OF THE NEW ENGLAND COAST SATURDAY. HOWEVER... THE STORM WILL BRING LARGE SOUTHEAST SWELLS TO THE COASTAL WATERS OF MASSACHUSETTS AND RHODE ISLAND... ESPECIALLY TO THE SOUTH COAST AND THE ISLANDS. SWELLS ARE EXPECTED TO BUILD SHARPLY LATE TODAY AND THEN PEAK SATURDAY TO BETWEEN 6 TO 10 FEET. LARGE SWELLS WILL PERSIST INTO SUNDAY AND THEN SUBSIDE SUNDAY NIGHT.
THE SWELLS WILL LIKELY YIELD LARGE BREAKING WAVES AT SOUTH AND EAST FACING BEACHES... AND THEY MAY ALSO PRODUCE DANGEROUS RIP CURRENTS. COASTAL RESIDENTS AND VISITORS SHOULD TAKE NOTICE OF THIS INCREASED POTENTIAL FOR DANGER ALONG THE COASTLINE STARTING LATER TODAY AND CONTINUING THROUGH THE WEEKEND....

Take a look at the cnn weather page:
http://www.cnn.com/2003/WEATHER/09/0...uda/index.html
Look at at path of this thing. What if it contiuned straight and blew thru that front? It has a bead on Bermuda and Cape Cod at the moment.

Big Swells
There were some huge swells off the Newport area Sat. A couple nuts on jet skis pulling their buddies into position to catch waves breaking over the reefs. Very cool to watch- from a distance.
