Nose is to the left in the pic. I'm remolding that plug now with an option for hook position a 1/2" further back.

Did u try reversing the 2? Opt to have the larger diameter in rear to have increased rear buoyancy.

Sorry I thought you were talking about the swimmer. The line tie on the needlefish is the horizontal loop. (To the left in the picture). I have used it in both directions. The amount of surface area on the plug is so great that it drives it up to wake on top even though it sinks. I think I either have to make the same plug with a thinner diameter or make a slightly shorter needle.

I thought the thin taper when i turned the mold model was the front. I would think it may help the nose from breaking thru surface.
A thinner profile will help sink rate.

The thin taper is in front. The plug has a ton of displacement which holds it up in current / during retrieve. It's very strong, I can place it across my knee, pull from each end and try to snap it and it won't. My next needle mold will be in the Super strike neighborhood of profile diameters considering the strength of the material.

Hee hee. U like my thin concept??
I just did a few more in a lighter wood to have a very slow level drop.
BTW do u want a template for the mold of one? Dupe is still set up. Take 2 minutes.

Nope, I'm working on a new "idea" I'll send it your way soon.
Re-Poured a mold today to make myself more nervous that I didn't screw it up. Old fckd up molds are recyclables. Just chop them up and mix it in.

I started this plug with wood. first maple in the 16/17 winter, then ayc the following winter, then started molding them last year, and just recently made a better mold where I took my time with the little details, and some fellow surfcaster's feedback after using the plug for themselves.
In the pic, the top one is ayc, which worked well but eventually the nose would bust open from contact with rocks. The second and third from the top are last year's mold, when I cast that mold I suspended the plug in my mold "box" and poured the silicone to mid-line with the intention of a 2 part mold. You can see on the green one all the air bubbles it trapped in the mold, and thus every plug I made was a one sided rough-side lol. The bottom one is the new mold, and you can see the small white spot on the base of the plug where the pliers are just ahead of the swivel... that is the original swivel position. In the new mold I simply added another swivel location.

Steve said he'd like the hook further back. It might offer a different swim depth with the same pour parameters. It also fishes better with a single belly treble and a flag so moving the hook back shouldn't be a diving issue, it might make the plug swim a wider dart.

Started building for the first time in a 8 years. Have a batch of tuna stickbaits, spooks and poppers in the making that were supposed to be for a Panama trip in April.

As u know Matt I been home recovering and out of work so I make the best of time. Did more slim needles slow sinks and decided to turn 20 ayc blanks for next years Pikes. I will be doing them with a single 5/0 hook and will be testing prototypes with alternative weight compensation. I also plan to try 2 different lips for an action I prefer in deep divers. I have 2 ready to swim today.

Those darters look great DJ. Curious on the needles. Must be a weight difference on the line to maple. Are the pines floating ?? What’s the weights.

All of those needles sink, the pine are about 1.75 oz the soft maple ones are about 2.
I got the last of what I had been working on finished this week. More needles in a different style, some in Pine and some in maple. The slimmer yellow one is pine and 1.75, the larger ones are 2.5 for maple and 2.0 for the pine. |
