If I had 100k that my 3 kids couldn't use for catholic school or college, I'd do exactly that. But I don't. And they come first. Always. When they're 100% secure, I can get the brand new 23-25 foot center console I want. Can't do it now.
Never occurred to me that I'd get b*tch slapped that resoundingly, outside of the political forum...

Had kids, limited extra money, I owned a boat; but it was something I could afford and fish fresh and salt. Basstracker V17 from basspro, very affordable and guess what, I put a 52 and 55 lber across her carpeted back deck inside Hingham harbor. You live in CT and have unreal river opportunities, I'd say screw the 23-25 foot CC and get a hybrid you can affortd and have some fun anyway.

I take pretty good advantage of the river opportunities with the charter trips we do. Amazing what you can do without leaving the CT River in June. We'll do 8-10 charter trips this year. If I had my own boat I still wouldn't get out more than 10-12 times in a season. With that limited frequency, I'm fine hiring professional charters. That will eventually change, but I coach 2 different baseball teams in the spring, Boy Scouts, then high school football for my oldest in the fall.
You are 100% right, you don't need a 40 foot Invincible to catch plenty of stripers and sea bass. My last boat was a 19 foot Key West and we did great. But I'm content waiting until my kids are absolutely 100% secure, then getting what I really want, knowing I can leave it to my kids because it will be a very high quality saltwater fishing boat.

I take my 17' to cuttyhunk several times a season.....my expenses for the boat are practically nill. Like 7 bucks to park at the ramp and 8 gal. of gasLanded many fish with wife and kids. Bought a kit and built it with my son...about 10 grand total into it.....and the learning experience with my adult son was gratifying beyond words.
No interest in building....that's ok it's not for everybody but there are many success stories out there....and it makes the boating experience extra special. And as I mentioned...not a lot of money.
Will it last forever...no. But it will outlast me and probably my son if he takes care of it.

Very, very cool! I'm probably not that handy where I'd let anyone set foot on a boat that I'd build.

I'm mostly suggesting this because you have a son or sons.
With the precut kit it's nothing you couldn't handle....you probably built models when you were a kid?
Its the same only larger...and more forgiving. The kit supplier has tutorials and forum members are a great help.
Your kids might really enjoy the experience. It's a confidence booster when they see what you can be accomplished with some thought and effort. You will also know more about your boat than most production boat owners
I'll just leave it at that.
Good luck...

Thanks Jim...I bought their plans for a 14 footer but didn't build it once I realized it wasn't what I really wanted. My 17 is perfect for two ....more if necessary. ....their 19 is wider heavier but again bigger motor. These designs are simple hulls to construct....you can keep them plain or go all out.
There are more sophisticated boat plans from other designers like the Marrisa 18 by B&B Yacth designs for one. Lot more boat but a lot more money...and time commitment.....bigger motor etc.
Check them out even if just for the design study. And...trailering and launching a 17 is really easy!

I have to take my 18.5' there this year with the right weather.
Jim- I think you can find a decent 20ish CC for around 25k. About 2 yrs of boat club and it's yours and it will still retain value. Couldn't live with the idea of being told when I could go and when I had to be back.

Not in one of my boats, went thru with Russ Wright of Lisa G. charters - hairy. I like plugging about 100 yds offshore and casting towards shore. And Nashawena - omg!
Let's do it!

He was just ranting that he figures between his slip fee, winterization at boat yard , fuel (300hp yami) though he only runs it about 150 hrs a year he figures it is costing him 15k a year in expenses, never mind top of the line gear and head aches of dealing with and keeping seagull poop off of
Your math makes sense in most cases, but as others have mentioned, the being able to come and go when u want on your schedule and more important the fishes' schedules without worrying about having to have your rental back at a certain time would suck. Like wife telling I to be home at a certain time. Kills the fun in fishing when on a clock.
Plus what happens if u out and engine blows due to being beat on by someone else and u stranded or have to foot the repair bills. Ouch. I remember when it happened to us with snow mobile rentals once and it was ugly. Police won the fight that what they were claiming/ charging for the repairs more than sled was worth so I was taking it home. I lost the battle.

So many advantages to having one on a trailer, hit south for the early push, wareham for sea bass, cape for tuna, Boston or other harbors come summer when they load with bunker, back to cape for albies, Westport for bones and sea bass, south for fall run, even further south for extended season and back in my day, the Thames for winter fun,
