Yngvey Malmsteen (who cares how you spell it!) and Steve Vai are nothing but alot of noise! They can't hold the jock of some of classic rocks heavy hitters! Best I ever saw was Stevie Ray.....head, shoulders and ankles above any of the rest I have seen! And I seen a few!
Eddie Van Halen.....was great but in his own genre. He could not play with the Claptons and SRV's of the world!

I like that metal list a little bit more, illustrates my point exactly, everybody has different tastes, you could have endless lists really.
How could we forget Nugent? If not for his guitar skills, but for his gut-busting style?
And speaking of gut-busting, what about Kyle Gass from Tenacious D?

Jimmy Hendrix on the tonight show with Johnny Carson said Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top was his favirote guitarist . That should get you on the top 100 ... Can't believe Carlos Santana isn't on it either.. Soul Sacrifice ?

One persons noise is another persons music. Is it not all noise? SRV is very good but, IMO and it is only my opinion, to compare him to several of the schooled jazz guitarist's such as Joe Pass or a Chet Atkins or Larry Carlton, Lee Ritenour style I'd have to say no contest. Just my opinion so relax. Thank god everyone doesn't like the same flavor or it would be a boring world.

True ... I can find music I like in all styles... I can even dig Ludwig van Beethoven ...Especially in a different context like Clockwork Orange . Clockwork Orange soundtrack turned me onto classical . those guys were mad men ..

Those lists are always a crock, can't take them seriously. I'm a huge Nirvana fan but Cobain was no great guitarist. I would rank him slightly higher than Joan Jett
I haven't seen someone mentioned that I think is way underrated.
Jeff Healy.
Don't think he's put out anything in years, but c'mon, the guys been blind since he was like 4 years old, plays with the guitar laying flat on his lap and he's better than half the people on those lists. Don't think he's good? Listen to Can You See The Light.

Best I can tell I have seen 75 off your list.
Voivod?
I thought I was the only one left alive that still remembers them.
And it includes Ted.
The older stuff was great.

I can agree with Malmsteen being a lot of noise but Vai had some talent.
Not any of the newer radio friendly crap.
The older stuff with Stu Hamm.
One more nobody mentioned.

Man, you guys need to grow up! The "how many notes per second" thing is so boring. We have a GREAT guitarist right here in New England who can play rock, jazz, swing and especially BLUES better than just about anyone else: Duke Robillaird. If you've never seen him, get out there and do it! Class, style, soul - and he doesn't need to hide behind a distortion box to do it! Do yourself a favor and hear Duke.

"How many notes a second"........if that is how anyone is judgeing a guitar players talent they might want to find another interest! I will take one long and properly bent SRV or Clapton note infused with emotion, feeling and commitment than 1 million of any "speed metal pretenders" notes any day of the week!
