Wow... the audio version is just amazing. So let's see, Penn has been around for only 30 years... only fishes green penns (yet it's a blackie in the pictures)... tieing direct with braid... 5 AM in the morning as opposed the to the ever elusive 5 AM in the evening... swish, swish, swish ... mono backing to braid topshot with a good old cinch knot... you know, the one "normal guys" know how to tie...
Just too much, Mikey, keep it coming.

It amazes me people are disecting the interview only to bash Mike. The guy loves to fish and does it more than 90% of the VS yuppies on this board including myself. Some unorthodox methods perhaps but at least he's out there doing his thing. I have heard stories about more than one fish regarding the bass n blues contest down there. So before you throw stones at Mike I would suggest a mirror. It is a tournament for shore caught fish,right?....
I'm sure at some point we all had methods that sharpies like Toby would find silly but you have to start somewhere.

Sounds like the guy fishes hard and is obviously very entertaining. We actually need more guys like him. As for the weights and measures, who really cares? Everyone reading this has exaggerated at one time or another. Except me, of course

You guys remember the Bud commercial with the lizards, Frankie and Louie?
Louie starts obsessing about not getting a frog and Frankie finally has had enough and says:
LEY IT GO LOUIE, LET IT GO!!!
That's what I have to say about this whole insane thread:
Let it go!!! Enough already!!!

He got bagged trying to pull a fast one in big fish for plugs contest is what really got many, here and there ,going about Mike and that was just wrong. He does exaggerate about the size of fish he catches also.
Now what I like about Mike is his being a regular guy and though many call him a clown he is real even though transparent.Seems he works and fishes hard and has great enthusiasm for the sport. Another big positive to me is he offers to fish with just about anyone and often does so.He also is`nt afraid to not go by the ' acceptable book' on how to do things...he just does them and is vulnerable to much critisism about his methods at times.
I think he has a big heart and is a good guy despite his shortcomings. Its very important for him to be seen as a highliner/sharpie and many laugh at him for this when many want the same.... he is just more open about this even if he is wrong. Are there worse things to want to be? Should we make fun of him for our supposed superiority?
I like Mike Have a great 2008 Mike

I HAVE fished with Mike of SOCO.
Other than the obligatory plug exchange,
It was uneventful for the both of us.
If he wasn't such a fraudulent chest beater, then
His comments would be held to less scrutiny.
And I yell at my kids, sometimes, when I don't mean to! I've also left work early ~with permission~ to go fishing before and not told the bride, and I think I bounced a check to AJ for a reel, but i'm not sure since it's only a forum board rumor and Hounder has yet to contact me, personally. Point being, WE ALL Efff up!
This is not about Mike's desire to fish and his relentless efforts to drive five minutes from his front doorstep on his way to work every morning and wet a line. Hell, we all should have it so goood !!!
It's about his SELF proclamation as a SHARPIE!
I would be so bold as to say, that not a one of NE's REEL sharpies
ever claimed to be one, let alone called up/took the call of some guy
from the local rag to be put into his misinformed and cockamaimey article,
'prematurely' so to speak.
I do believe that RockHoppy will indeed catch the fish of his lifetime, from HIS ROCKS one day and when that day arrives we'll all celebrate his accomplishment. I mean who gets to that most excellent part of the Striper Coast as regularly as him? Of the +/- 270 day season (April to Dec), Mike's prolly out there 259.367823 days! Even a broken watch is right, twice a day, right ? But seriously folks,
NO ONE doubts Mike's efforts, just the veracity of his claims.
Nice new plug design, Mike, for real .
That does look feeshy, are they weighted or au natural and
have ya got anything in yellow over yellow/pearl or mack green over yellow ?
Sea ya at The Edge's Show in NPT, bro.

When it comes to fishing, I believe half of what I see and nothing of what I hear.
My definition of a sharpie is a guy who catches fish and keeps his yap shut about it.
But, if anyone wants to paint a bullseye on themselves, it's their prerogative. Mike will learn in time why the real sharpies don't yap about what they catch. Instant acclaim gets old real quick when it results in a crowd following you around.

i think if he just apologized for cheating then we'd all wipe the slate clean
Same for BassDawg, if he just apologized for his pirate/rapper-like antics, and gave us his word he would never post on a fishing forum again, we'd could give him a clean slate too

Also, if he didn't take pics with fish that he never caught and lie to people about catching it to win a friendly contest, he wouldn't get this reaction. Just the thought of that makes me want to

If your directing your 'rumors' at me, I think this thread should answer any questions. I dont have to cheat to win a contest.

It doesn't matter how big someone elses fish is. It doesn't matter how big your past ones were. Your next fish is what matters. And even that one single fish is only important if you have fun catching it.

the best r.i. surf fisherman and his partner have never graced the pages of this site. the locals here in so.co. do know of whom i'm talking about. i really get a kick out of the guys who have been fishing for 20 yrs. or so and do consider themselfs sharpies. hell, i've been doing it for 50 yrs andf still know as much about bass as i do about women.

I know both about Women & Bass... just ask!
Pencil- Poppin' Mike... if you really want a "40" try a large Pikie/ Jointed Eel, or real Eel in the Wee hours! Poppers are for Rats!
That fish in your pic w/ the Pencil on your rod as #^^^^^^& said is tops 22 lbs! The one on the rocks eating the Darter is MAYBE 14 lbs!

Hey Zac, this all began with Mikey's latest installment of
"The Making of One's Name".
Perpetrated by him,
with his permission granted
and released by the ProJo last week .
Bygones would be in the PAST, right?
Check my posts, they all refer to these latest "claims".

I don't know this guy personal (altough the other two guys mentioned in the article are my cousin and my partner) but after the pounding he's taken over the last few days, it might be wise to put him on suicide watch. One thing for sure, be careful when you bash lest you never know when it'll be your turn in the barrel
