Talked to Rappin Mikey yesterday. He's nervous about the ice. Here is what I see:

Today
Plentiful sunshine. High 27F. Winds N at 5 to 10 mph.

Tonight
Mainly clear. Low 13F. Winds light and variable.
Monday December 19

Day
Partly cloudy and windy. High 39F. Winds SSW at 15 to 25 mph.

Night
A few snow showers around in the evening, otherwise mostly cloudy. Low 24F. Winds W at 10 to 20 mph. Chance of snow 30%.
Tuesday December 20

More sun than clouds. Highs in the low 30s and lows in the mid 20s.
Wednesday December 21

Chance of showers. Highs in the mid 40s and lows in the low 30s.
Thursday December 22

Occasional showers possible. Highs in the mid 40s and lows in the upper 20s.
Friday December 23

Considerable cloudiness. Highs in the low 40s and lows in the low 20s.
Saturday December 24

Mix of sun and clouds. Highs in the low 30s and lows in the low 20s.
Sunday December 25

Sunny. Highs in the mid 30s and lows in the low 20s.
Monday December 26

Sunny. Highs in the mid 30s and lows in the upper teens.
Tuesday December 27

Times of sun and clouds. Highs in the mid 30s and lows in the low 20s.

I think with the long nights, we should be fine with no more 40's after next week. I can still remember driving past Long Pond on the way to Naked Xmas with no ice there on the 24th, and we had plenty of ice by the tourney.

Have faith!

The weather forecast looks good. I was beginning to wonder if I was going to bring my ice fishing sled or my canoe.

Getting up over 50 yesterday sure isn't helping for the ice over.

Just talked to Doctor's of Da Bait, which is the tackle shop across the street from the pond... He will be open and stocked with shiners at 5 AM on the 14th for anybody who needs anything.

Question thinking...............um

how long does it take to create safe ICE anyways?

and since winter is LATE a back up date
maybe...could/should be considered.

that sounds unusual Bill, on the Nino.

but someone else may live closer i think...

that's why i asked: (given cold enough temperatures)
how long does it take to make ice what....4- six inches thick?

We're going to make a call a week from Saturday. I've been looking at the weather and we should have a decent 9 day stretch starting tomorrow.

I'm already booked for the motel for two unrefundable nights, so I wouldn't like to lose the $130 on the lodgings. I plan to take a trip out there a week from Saturday.

Tonight
Windy with mostly clear skies. Low 13F. Winds W at 20 to 30 mph.
Thursday December 29

Day
A mainly sunny sky. High around 30F. Winds W at 10 to 20 mph.

Night
Partly cloudy skies early with a few snow flurries later at night. Low near 20F. Winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph.
Friday December 30

Flurries or a mix of rain and snow showers throughout the day. High 38F. Winds S at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precip 40%.
Saturday December 31

A few snow showers. Highs in the mid 30s and lows in the low 20s.
Sunday January 1

Times of sun and clouds. Highs in the upper 30s and lows in the mid 20s.
Monday January 2

More clouds than sun, windy. Highs in the upper 30s and lows in the low teens.
Tuesday January 3

Windy with times of sun and clouds. Highs in the upper teens and lows in the mid single digits.
Wednesday January 4

Mostly sunny. Highs in the mid 20s and lows in the mid teens.
Thursday January 5

Mostly Cloudy. Highs in the mid 30s and lows in the mid teens.
Friday January 6

More clouds than sun. Highs in the mid 30s and lows in the mid 20s.

It all depends on the conditions. I've seen it go 4" with temps low at night and just above freezing during the day in two weeks (it was more like 5"). It's all about when the skim ice sets up, really. If it sets up today, then we could get good progression until early next week, when it should really start to thicken.

i think you have to factor in the WIND Chill

because it is real Nasty cold today 31 with high wind
in my neck of the woods, so colder up there
so Bill's prediction by new years is spot on...

what kevin said... also.. wind tends to catch the open pockets of water and rip up the "caught" areas.. piling the ice on windward shores... the wind is NOT your friend when making ice...

Wind Chill has no effect on making ice, Air Temp is Air temp....that just has to do with how cold we feel

all wind will do is chill the Water/Land down quicker to the current Air Temp....so if its 33 Deg. with 50 mph winds and a wind chill of 15 deg. the water still won't get any colder than the Air Temp of 33 Deg.....it will just get there faster

Wind Chill is the Effective Temperature that we feel from the Wind+Temp. Body Heat will leave your body at the effective temperature rate vs the actual Air Temp rate.

If its 33 Deg Air temp and a Windchill of 15 Degrees....your body will lose its body heat as if it were a 15 Deg Air temp w/ no wind.....but your body temp still wouldn't drop below the air temp of the actual 33 Deg. Air Temp...you'd be dead....but you'd still only be at 33 Deg.

That all being said...the projected forecast for Hubbardston before the tournament is looking good...I think we'll be all set.

Yeah Casey,
Even if there is ice there today, I'm not sure it will make it through the next three days...Tuesday on is where I think we will really start to build. What I'm hoping is that when I head out there on Saturday 1/7, that I can see people fishing or a couple inches of good ice. That would mean that in the next week after that, we should get up to around 5 inches.

Pray for cold!

in the meantime consider Plan B
and how to best use your pre paid stay
if "no ice"
