Last night Bev is on the phone looking out the kitchen window and she yells something big just ran past Minnie and is on the wall looking at her. I grabbed the flashlight and ran outside. About 25 feet away from Minnie is two coyotes checking out my dog. Bev said the dog ran by her so close it looked like they were only a couple of feet apart. I think the coyote was checking to see if my dog could defend herself because she is bigger than the coytoes. She is limping from when her hind leg at the first joint above the foot hit the top step as she ran onto the deck. I start yelling at the my dog to get up here and she wants to check out her new friends. Ya there were two of them one big and one not so big. Minnie limps up to the deck and the coyotes never moved even when I started off the deck to meet the dog halfway. Not until I brought the dog inside did the coytoes finally lose interest and disappear over the wall. I have been meaning to buy my first at home weapon for quite some time and I think the time is right.
Also this morning my wife beeps to me at 6:30 a.m. as she backs out of the driveway. I am sure the neighbors appreciated the beep. I turn to look at her and she is pointing behind me. I figure I am turning around to face down the coytoes again when I get to look at the biggest buck I have ever seen sauntering across the side yard. Mr. 8 pointer walks over to the arborvite and proceeds to eat breakfast. What a sight. Looked well over 200 #'s.

Same problem out here except my 3 year old plays out back. Just the other day I saw one jump over the wall and into the woods. I have a rifle on standby just in case.
Same here in the middle of the day, I have no guns either but have been thinking of changing that real soon. That's what happens when there is over development and little to know woods left. I have a very old farmers rd. in my yard and the wildlife use it as a path I see everything
i have a yel lab 85 lbs .. when i let him outat night i,v seen him playing w/ coyots at diff times .. kill them when u can ... they eat everthing they catch.....
Nothing like a reliable ol 870 for home defense use......

We have a lot of bear up here....presently the largest handheld I have is a .357 packed with silver tips.....I've been itching for that .500 they make now....as wifey keeps seeing the bears get bigger I'll have reason to get it .....

Same with my youngest Black Lab. I've seen him licking face with a Coyote through the back fence. The older Lab pretty much ignores them. With 14,000 acres of State Forest behind my house I've pretty much been forced into a peaceful coexistence with coyotes. My attitude on them changed a lot after reading the book Gods Dog. I cant recall the author but it really explained a lot of the behavior I see every day. The amazing thing is my cat has made it eleven years without becoming Coy Chow. She is obviously smarter than they are.
You're probably going to be restricted re: lawful discharge of firearms, depending on where you live (note your state and local ordinances which govern protection of life and property). I've taken yotes with .22 LR, but it's not the ideal solution (I would prefer a larger varmint round like a .223).
If the yotes are fearless and within 25-30 yards, you have a good shot at them with a bow. Bows are quiet and deadly.
Yotes are one of the few critters you can legally hunt at night (and year-round) in most jurisdictions (when they are most active).
Around here the coyotes live in very small tracts of woods and routinely prowl through the neighborhood at night. Small dogs and cats are definitely on the menu.
I'm pretty sure coyotes got my old border collie a few years back. It was horrible not knowing what happened to our dog, we never found anything.
Be sure to watch your older pets and probably even your younger ones if it's mid-winter and the coyotes are hungry. Ask any vet or animal control officer, if your dog disapears there's a very good chance it was coyotes.
I floor the gas pedal everytime I see a coyote. I know they were just doing what they do, but I'm anti-yote since then. Tough to not have the thought of a best friend's last few minutes of life being spent getting ripped apart alone in the darkness tick you off.
what a tough son of a beotch she was....you could hold a rubber 8 inch ring up in
the air and the dog would jump up and grab it in mid air and just hang there like she was glued on.....lookin sideways...real mean like
then it would start going ugh ugh - ugh ugh tugging away....
it made me real strong keeping that dog hoisted up in the air like that.
you could say she was my gym .my bar bells..or weights @60 lbs.
so one day i swung her onto my back and she never let go as
i walked down the road for a 1/4 mile with her tugging ugh ugh ugh endlessly....all the way...
then i tied on some carpet to my dirt bike for traction....and we'd go riding together out on the trails with the dog in between my legs sitting on the gas tank....she took all the turns and bumps like a pro!
i said all this to illustrate how tough this dog was......unbelievable.
i've posted this story before.....but some of the new guys might enjoy it, you could hear a whole pack of coyote pups....yelping most nights callin for their mama to bring home food up in the hills.

A side note:
i'll never forget one day...and i never went anywhere without my 22 long rifle... the ole lady and i were sitting on the hillside getting some sun....and she had removed her top.... getting some sun
on her chest o- natural.... and was laying down....off in the distance i see a coyote moving and decide to shoot it....
i said....dont move...and used her as a gun rest.... not wanting to give our position away by getting up.... i squeezed off a shot
while she squinted her eyes shut....and i missed....but then the spent cartridge still hot....ejected and burnt her....as it was still hot.
so, i guess that was a bad idea.... lol ... and got yelled at...

anyways back to the dog.... one night i let old sadie out as per usual to
stand watch.... and it was a totally pitch black night.... i was watching tv or doing something inside....cooking maybe....but the front door was wide open...
all of a sudden
i heard this huge commotion of snarling and biting , growling ..the nastiest dogfight i have ever heard....i would've grabbed my riffle but you couldnt see anything period....and would have needed a night vision scope....to see...it was that dark.
i instead grabbed onto a long piece of thick manzanita wood (like oak) that i was gonna cut up and burn and ran with it....getting real close...
swinging it like a bat....while yelling at the top of my lungs, swearing, cursing at
those damned coyotes ->thinking they were killing my dog....
a couple of times i got bumped by the animals and swung repeatedly my weapon of choice but never connected. finally i got ahold of
fur...and grabbed it up into my chest hoping it was my dog and not a coyote...there was several out there that night...and went running back to the house....with the dog in my arms....
i could see the front door opening ....because of the tv...
i was covered in blood and so was the dog.....all wet and slimey
and i was afraid .... she'd die before i could get her to a vet.
i thought...emergency stitches with fishing line...then i'll go!
and I put her in the tub...to rinse her off ....to find the wounds
i couldn't find a one.....not one cut.... it was all coyote blood.
i was never so proud of that dog.....and fed her some leftover steak. i tried searching by flashlight for the blood trail but kept loosing it... same thing at first light of day....it eventually ended.

I have a friend here in Orleans, they had 3 the other day trying to get at his older dog!!
The area has lost 10 cats this summer, and no one has seen a rabbit, skunk, squirrel, or anything up there in a year now!!
Has already shot 2 and plans to start shooting more!! Goose Homock is now a coyote pelt check station!!
I have two, one that you can pump up to, well if you pump it ten times it seems like it could kill anything. I also was just given a brand new crossman, never used, that is a pump up job also. I think I am overdue for a nice .22 rifle or a decent .22 semi-auto target pistol though.

I grew up with a male German Shepard/Irish Wolfhound mix; 140 pounds. (Wolfie) That was afraid of a 7 pound Siamese cat.
One swipe to the nose with those claws.
I live in a one family house.
25 feet at the peak.
5 miles due north of the State House.
I can see the Hancock and Prudential towers from the peak of the roof.
The coyotes go through the yards here so fast the dogs don't even see/hear/smell them.
I watched one; one morning, right out my front window.
Broad daylight.
3 dogs on one side, one on the other.
Vanished quicker than a deer.
The dogs didn't even notice.

mountains at 3000 feet.

i was staying at the cape one summer and lost two fully grown
cats...in two weeks....to yotes....and haven't had cats since because of them.

Yep or any other animal they come in contact with and I live amongst plenty of them. I saw several sickly Foxes this year. All you can do is keep the shots current. Raccoons and Skunks are more likley to be infected but this past year my bigger concern was Bats. Twice this past summer I found the dogs squared off with Bats on the lawn, in the middle of the day. I dont think healthy Bats walk around in broad daylight.
