Stuck E-Break
Parked my 2002 Tacoma Friday night and didn't move it until today. Hopped in to run to the grocery store this evening and the E-Break wouldn't pop free. It is a manual tranny, so I always set the break when parked. The pull arm to set the break will release, but the break stays locked and the pull arm moves freely. You can just feel that it has not disengaged. Drove around the condo to see if it would pop, but no go. Any easy way to free it or does she need to go right to the mechanic?
This after I just got it back last week because some D-Bags in town thought it was a good idea to crawl under her and cut the catalytic converter out while I was at work.    |

I put a shopt of WD-40 on it before I tried moving it, but that didn't do the trick. Maybe if it sits for a little while.

See if the front cable is moving backwards when its released. It could be the ratchet in handle,or there's an actuator on the backing plates one each side.see if those are releasing when someone releases the ebrake. Those actuators used to rust on the pivot.

PB Blaster? Good stuff. I'd suggest Brake Clean type products.
You might try backing a little with the ebrake on, forward, back, spray, etc... If you have a manual and you use it frequently its less likely to seize but the oversand (salt) stuff we do is harsh on them. Not sure how Tacomas are these days but they were notorious for rusty parts under normal conditions 15 years ago when I worked with them. Could also be a cable clip that is preventing full extension of the mechanism but most likely the ebrake mechanism at the rear.
Ironic how typical Tacoma problems are still happening 20 years later.

it isn't uncommon for this to happen with my Tacoma. Spray the whole cable down from where it comes through the body (get up in the cableway too), pay special attention to the pivots and the wheel area.
I have a standard, so I use my e brake all of the time. I'd imagine that if I didn't I would have the problem frequently.
It may take a day or two to completely loosten up. I usually spray it again a day or so down the road.

My guess is either the kids who cut the convertor off hit the cable with the sawzall, or the shop afterwards put the lift on the cable and once the nicked/pinched cable was pulled in it got jammed. Really shouldn't stick if you use it every day I would think that's more of a lack of use problem
