Hand Carving Tools?

Looks like I will be going down the road of Hand Carving.

Any recommendations as far as Carving Knives or any other must haves concerning tools?

I also do have a dremel, any attachments considered a must (right now there are just a few attatchments which are really worn out)?

Do a forum search....lots of info on handcarving! Alot of guys use a home made vice and a spoke-shave to carve with as opposed to a knife. Many here will be happy to answer your questions!

Bandsaw is huge .Makes quick work of it .. Gary2 only used a beltsander from there . or you could use a flat bottom spoke shave..not round bottom !!!

Then you need a vice and a lure jig that you make your self .. The jig is the best part ... will post pic later ... Numby taught me ..

ya know I did and the forum search engine gave me little to nothing which I thought was odd...if i can just fix things with just a hammer when it comes to technology...

But anyway, I do have a vice however its stationary as it is bolted down to a table.

I didn't like that first jig I made ,, The post were too big . This is a second attempt ... You can still modify .. I had to notch the top so block would'nt spin when carving ... after thought .. And making little blocks to hold the plug were a PIA ,,Hard Maple..You may have a better idea . could even be metal .. .. Only thing you should do is use hard wood ,,especially for the octagon .. I used yellow heart so I can crank the vise up on it and it dosen't mind .. Carrage bolts and tubing they run through you can get at HD ..

Zeal, if you looking for CARVING TOOLS KNIVES, for SOFT WOOD to make GILL'S , FIN'S, TAILS GROVES go to MICHALES, or
AC MOORES look where the AIR BRUSHS are kept they have good starter set for under $10.00. it will give you a bunch of different cuts.

Zeal ... Are you handcarving lures or actual fish ? If your handcarving lures like Big O ,,Maverick ,, all you need is a flat spoke shave ,, no need for a round one .. I made that mistake . If your making fish replica's or adding more detail you need more carving type tools .. sorry ,, PM's not working .. time out connection .

I aim to make Darters, Pikies, Nikes, Pocket Rockets, Dannies, Jointed Eels, Minnows, etc. I am guessing that is under lures? Unsure of the difference.

I have Poplar and Pine dowels on me so that will be the thing I will carve. I have maple but they are 1X2X2, not dowels.

Lures you listed are commonly best made on a lathe ..Not that it can't be done hanndcarved but why? .. Handcarved type lures are usually Big O's , Maverick's, Top gun, Bomber, Rapala.. you know ,, fish like looking lures as opposed to plain old round .. You saying you have dowels makes me think you miss the whole thing of ,, tracing fish shape top and side on a block of wood ,, Cutting top profile out on the Bandsaw,,, taping the block back together and cutting out the side profile on the "Bandsaw"... Then round the shape out using the jig and spokeshave .. You should do a little more homework before going shopping for tools .. You might be the next Twisted Whistle... , ,, We're not talking the same lanquage

hence why i double check before i do anything (haven't bought tools, i just have wood laying around)! i have rapala's and such for freshwater, however the other lures have such more of an acclaim I figured to shoot for those.

The dowel already has the basic shape, just have to take it down some more from there. But that is more along the lines of just taking wood knives instead than spokeshave for those types I assume? Lathes are out of the question unfortunately.

so to set the record straight on hand carving it's: blocks = spokeshaving and dowels = knives?

the spokeshave seemed to be able to deal with dowels quick as well as the blocks that's why I ask. but for the other lures i aim to make, i cannot do those using the shave and block method or its just a PIA and will take longer to do?

I'm very confused, I need to see the jig and the spoke shave in use. I'm always looking for a better way.
