painting help

i have run into painting some lures. and i am wondering what the experts think. I have done nothing different to these 4 lures however after all said and done and completely dry i decide to clear them with the same one i ahve been using right along and bam i get cracking and lifting in the paint, can someone tell me the possible causes? here is what was done to the plugs up to that point. this has happened on 4 plugs out of 20+ that i have been doing, all different colors.

1) sealed and dried for almost a week
2) sanded and primed (grey)
3) shot with white ( dried )
4) shot with silver ( strip downt he side then dried )
5) painted the top with apple paints and allowed to dry 2 days
6) cleared tonight and got this ( see pic. )

any help or guidence would be great, thanks in advance

PAINT TOO THICK SKIPPY OR putting a solvent paint over a water based...

If i scuff this down i should be able to recover this right?

I'm no expert but here's some ideas and things that happened to me.

Plug wasn't fully dried from sealer and bubbled paint.

Too many coats of paint. I do the minimum amount when I can.

I know with spray paints if they dry too long in between coats you'll get that problem.

Could have gotten Oil or a greasy substance on it, even touching a plug can do that.

Humidity can also be a factor.

I know that doesn't narrow it down but these are some reasons it could of happened.

Did it get lumpy after the etex? If so, I had the same problem with system 3. I think the two part mixes generate heat, which causes the sealer to exude from the wood if you don't let them dry long enough.

I've been waiting 3 weeks after the oil based sealer I use (Behr exterior wood sealer #92) to prime, then wait another week to paint, then wait another week to clear. Yes it takes a while, but it works for me.

mike where did you get the 92 mix that's been discontinued for eons. I have less than a quart left here. GREAT stuff.

I found a real good thing to help the sealer and the plugs to dry between coats is to hang them by the furnace as it helps to pull the moisture out of the plug and also helps the paint to cure up and harden. also if you don't recoat a plug with in an hour you NEED to wait 48 hrs so as the paint won't react with it's self and bubble up.

well i figured out what it was, thanks for all the responses.

- i bought the little women a oil burning in scent thingy, and with all the spraying going on she felt it necessary to burn this things for hours and with mega candles so it was just about boiling. there was residue everywhere in that area. ...... Bad news for me had alot of plugs sitting there that need to get wiped down before i do anything hope i can clean them with out messing stuff up worst.

I had almost two gallons sitting in my basement from the previous owner. The stuff does work very well, especially on pine. Gotta let it dry real good, though...three weeks for me. I did seal a pine danny body with it last winter and left it floating in my eel tank all season...never absorbed any water in three months.

They still make the stuff, but its not called #92 anymore. I think its called 4 way exterior waterproofer or something like that. The labels looks pretty close too. Its really just a tricked out linseed oil from what I can tell and doesn't need any thinning, ever.

really? I had called them a few years ago and they said it was gone and not replaced at the time. Watch some of the other stuff they sell it's silicone based...bad juju

Yes, you warned me about that stuff before. Pretty sure the new stuff has linseed oil too, but will double check this weekend when I make my Krylon run...
