Sports Talk - Title TownSports Talk - Our Home for the 2004/2007 World Champion Red Sox, Super Bowl XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX Champion Patriots! SEVENTEEN TIME NBA Champion Boston Celtics, 2011 winners of Lord Stanley's Cup Boston Bruins!!!
Bobby Orr's stick handling was always what impressed me the most I think. The things he could do with a puck boggled the mind! Players today are so one dimensional......quite sad really. Having grown up in a house with an older brother who ate, slept and dreamed Big Bad Bruins, I had no choice but to watch the hockey games and I was glad I did. He was amazing.....the Babe Ruth of hockey! Watching the Bruins of my youth was the best....like watching the Bird Celtics!
Could anyone imagine if Bobby got to play all his home games on a huge rink like Grezky had in Edmonton instead of one of the smallest rinks (Boston garden)
That video of #4 brought back a lot of childhood memories. Watching him and the rest of the Bruin's back then was fantastic. Bobby Orr is the greatest to ever play the game and still remains a great guy if you ever get a chance to run into him. This is even after being screwed by his agent. They don't make role models for kids like that anymore it seems.

they took the audio off the first youtube video on the thread here by redmasque so click on this, it's a live version but it works if you start them around the same time. start the rhapsody first.
Watching the video brought back some old memories. I used to love watching the Bruins, unfortuatly they were pretty bad for so long , I got used to not watching them. Play off hockey is whole level above the regular hockey.
Hockey thoughts:
The book "Orr on Ice"
Peter Puck
Cheevers mask with all of the stitches
Jonny Bucik hip checks
Espo camping out in front of the net and scoring
Pie Mackenzie
Ace Baily with a white turtle neck
Gary Doak blocking shots

How lucky we were to have had him and that we can forever call him the greatest ever!!! He will forever be that to us! I think when they coined the phrase "poetry in motion" it was Bobby Orr they were talking about.......he was simply amazing to watch! I bet I have seen that video 200 times and I still get slack jawed watching it!! Happy Birthday Bobby Orr.......#4!
Bump to commemorate the 43rd anniversary of "The Goal"

If you buy that "plus/minus" gives you the best picture of the most complete hockey player, it's not even close. Even though they didn't award for it during Orr's day, he led the NHL in +/- for 6 years, and never finished with a minus rating. Including the all time record of +124 in 1970-1971. Except for when he was in the box himself, he played on the PK unit, and always was at the left point on the PP. They didn't record time on ice back then, but he routinely played over 30 minutes a game. Only two players have ever finished a season with a +100 or more rating---Orr and Larry Robinson, and the case is closed there for "best defensemen ever". Because in addition to being a scoring machine, Orr played defense.
Gretzky led the league in +/- 3 times, but, he also finished with a minus rating 7 times over his career. Which, granted, was twice as long as Orr's.
Both made everyone around them better, too.
Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools, because they have to say something.
