x pattern under shrink tube question

What do you guys use under shrink tube to get an x pattern for rod grips? I thought I had some thin nylon cord kicking around but can't find it, so since I have to hit up a store I'd figured I'd ask what the right stuff to use would be?Thanks in advance

heavy mono, like 200lb.

ive seen guys use round boot laces, oval shoes laces that come on skate shoes, and regular thin rope.

Nylon twine works great too. You can get it in different sizes. I saw a small diamond wrap done with it an covered with shrink wrap. Nice affect.

Mason line works great. You can either put over cork tape for a larger butt wrap or over bare blank. I mark out the X design with a ruler for uniformity with a marking pen. I carefully slide shrink wrap over not disturbing the pattern, One way to keep it in it's place is to use spray adhesive prior to wrapping the twine/mono.
