Sly Lives!

Looking for something funkalicious on Friday nite I found Sly and the Family Stone, Tokyo Jazz Festival 2008 -

Damn...I saw Sly at the Newport Festival....uh...I think it was 40 years ago this summer...

Anyway, Sly and Rose Stone, with some nice scat singing by Rose's daughter Lisa at the end:

"There is no royal road to this heavy surf-fishing. With all the appliances for comfort experience can suggest, there is a certain amount of hard work to be done and exposure to be bourne as a part of the price of success." From "Striped Bass," Scribner's Magazine, 1881.

Eddie in the u tube If you want me to stay. Check out the other keyboard player. White balding guy, that has to be Paul Shaffer. You think?

Larry Graham the bass player for Sly was the first one to Slap a bass and often played percussion on bass that became synonymous with Funk .... Now I have to google and find out what ever happened to Larry Graham ,,, sure its good ..

I knew that was him, although he is younger in that video.

Nice alternate version of If You Want Me to Stay - a little jazzy Ray Charles type of thing going on -

Found this interview with Sly that preceded that performance - interesting, he talks about what it might be like in the future - the future being 2009...this was in 1974 -

Part 1:

Part 2:
