Knife Sharpening???

This is my Dad's Navy dive knife! Dad was a Frogman in Underwater Demolitions during WW II! Anyway, I have had the knife for awhile now and not really known what to do with it other than look at it as a keepsake! I think however I am going to use it when I am wet suiting! It is stainless I believe as it has very little corrosion given it is over 60 years old! I would like to restore the blade to shiny, sharp condition......any recommendations?

I wouldn't risk losing that knife. It was probably your Dad's best friend once upon a time. Put it with his flag.

If you want i can buff it up to a chrome shine and put an edge that you can shave with.

You won't lose it if you attach a lanyard.

My first thought was don't use it. However you are only going to use it for emergencies and what better knife to have than your father's that made it through the war.

Get some Renaissance Wax, Larry/BF. It will help preserve the leather and the metal.

"Renaissance wax is used by the British Museum & restoration specialists internationally to revive and protect valuable furniture, leather, paintings, metals, marble, ivory etc."

My jar of it is 200ml/7 fl oz. I've been using it for over a decade. Do a search online for where to buy it. (~$28 + shipping)

Great stuff !! I'ved used it on power tool beds, fishing rods, fishing reels, knives, sheaths, bicycle frames and furniture.

I'd put it away as it is with his flag if it were me, your looking at alot of work to bring that knife back to it's original shape.

The hilt (finger guard) is bent back and would need to be straightened out and there's a risk of it snapping at the point where it's bent, the blade itself is too pitted to bring back a nice smooth finish so you'd have to grind off at least a 32nd of an inch to smooth it out the right way and the blade itself would need to reshaped because it looks like it has seen a sharpening stone quite a few times towards the rear, and the leather being as dry as it is because of age would basically dissolve in any prolonged time in water.

Great thought and idea but put it where it should go, with his flag.

Just my .02

Insanity is a long and winding road ... I think I finally made it there.
