prototype
our, just trying to give credit to a few canal gentlemen who have taken me under their wing with some advice. the one pictured is made from 1 1/8" dia. natural color nylon. time to machine is aprox. a few minutes to form the shape. this is done with a pc. of hardened tool steel blade on a metal cutting lathe. the form tool is feed into the work pc. using the cross slide to a dial reading. when correct dia. is obtained the dial is set and the process is easy. have been trying some pvc (grey in color)

what is the material used near the tail?
SS...Lead?..
can def. tell a machinist made that lure...
clean...very clean.

thanks. nose is 303 stainless steel. lip die , kick press, arbor, vise, or power press being used? just blanks or complete with hole and bend?

I was joking, sort of, but if you can make lip dies (or have a laser/water jet)......well I'm not greedy, I'd be happy with just blanks. As for a press, beats me but I'd track down whatever I needed.

i took some casts at a local h.s. football field. using a eyeless 10' daiwa pole with a abu garcia ambassador bg 7000 hsn reel with 20lb mono. was ble to get 100yds. had several canal fisherman makes some casts at the canal and they surpassed my casts. flies like a missle, no wobble. it does sink, but i try to stop the filght just before the water. on the surface it swims well.

thanks. first plugs i tried the eyes were towards the weighted end. was not happy with distance . moved to present possition and flared eye socket, happier with distance

looks great. Neat idea.
I have pretty much tried making some kind of fishing lure out of everything possible, material wise. Stainless, delrin, pvc, polycarb, titanuium, aluminum, HDPE, you name i've tried it . I still prefer wood as that is what I find most satisfying. Below is the first plug I ever made. I copied a large Gibbs polaris. I figured I would take a piece of tool steel cut out the profile on a small cnc bridgeport and then harden it. I then jammed it into a solid piece of PVC on a large lathe. Problem is you would need a large lathe to do something like this as it takes a lot of power. It ended up being the first and last plug ever built with that tool. Not worth it. That pvc plug also weighs 6 oz as it sits so I think the pvc plugs some are building out of pvc are not pure pvc, as it is really heavy.

Form tools are too easy. They will chatter alot of you're not careful.
Nothing like single point tooling if you want to enjoy it.
The squid plug looks good but is the hook on the wrong end?

as to the cast, i can throw 100yds with my first ever conventional reel. a more experienced friend can surpass my cast. looking forward to try it and catch first fish with it at the cannal. thanks

The tail weight looks like a typical cone tail weight that Stan Kuzia use to make. Stan Kuzia and Stan Gibbs worked on that shape togther for plugs in the canal.
Is that where you got the inspiration for that design?
