Newbie - Terminal Tackle Question

Most of my life I was a freshwater lover, then started boating - now I'm starting to surf cast (south county ri mostly). My local tackle shop says the less terminal tackle the better which I can understand, but is it ok to use a snap with a plug or should I use a leader and knot the plug? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Also some rigs for Bluefish & stripers would be great - I'm used to crappie and smallmouth bass.
