I underwrap anything used for stripers . 7 ft on up. All boat rods . I rarely coat underwraps before wrapping the overwrap. I feel it bonds both wraps together. Never had a problem with all the rods I've wrapped. Mainly it make the underwrap smooth so that the overwrap thread doesn't slip into the underwrap. Good rule of thumb has been size A underwrap thread and size D overwrap. Hope this helps

That is very common to see when redoing old wraps. Like Numby said probably CP.

When redoing old rods often I find that the guides are not in the right spot. I have wet sanded the blank, do the wrapping and put 1 coat of finish on the blank.

I usually use underwraps, I like the look, unless are really watching the weight.

I spun the blank in the wrapper and hit those spots with 300 grit, thus the dull look,,, I'm going with the wrap right over the cleaned up areas then prime then a couple hi build,,, there are 3 d foot and then 7 single

Go Light with the amount of finish under that guide Guppy.....otherwise is tends to wick up the feet of the guide and gets way too much and looks like crap.

WRT under wraps, I have done several different things. For I have a couple rods, some larger like 50 LB class rods that have noisey clicks when bending, not a big deal but I just wonder why.

So I have done under wraps and then wrapped over them. I have done an underwear and then sealed with CP then wrapped over that. And even did am underwrap and put a thin coat of finish on that then wrapped over. This mainly on BIG stuff, 50's and 80's.
