What kind of fishing is there in Cali?

I'm considering moving out to the LA area, most likely Laguna, Newport beach area. One of my conditions is that I want to have a boat out there. Is there the diversity that we have in new england? I have a feeling I'll be in for a major let down coming from chatham with the variety that I have now.

Anyone spent much time out there?

I've considered the same thing..west coast is where all the good riding and computer jobs are at. Im pretty sure there is a wide variety of species that live up and down the whole coast. I wonder what it would be like to hook into one of those killer whales.

I've only seen cali once and that was over in 29palms (desert training with the Marine Corps). didnt get to see much civilazation. it was all desert. would love to ride over there some day.

would be nice to hook a fat linesider over there too.

Arrow i would be one....

i know allot about the place....
the fishing....not so much...
except for freshwater...
there you go the day before
to get in a line to fish the
following day for boats
in the lakes.

the surf is larger than here
stripers tend to be in the north
they need rivers to spawn

it's life in the fast lane. there
the pace is totally different.

i suggest you go there
for an exploratory visit
first to see if you like it.

since your from chatham
i suggest you also look at
Oregon because it
reminds me of the cape.

not tamed and without
the vast population
thats in cal...

theres a member here
from cali i believe , who could
give you better details.

Arrow kelp beds

kelp beds is what runs the ocean there....

they have absolutely no root system and absorb
all their nutrients right from the water.
they attach themselves to a rock as an anchor
and then grow a hundred feet tall and is one of the
fastest growing plants on the planet.

otters roll themselves up in the kelp vegetation before
bedtime because they don't want to drift out into
the open sea while asleep.

these kelp beds are what provide habbitat for the
fisheries and theres plenty of seals. they have many
public piers for fishing too...and it's like the ditch atmosphere
in that sense. First guy i met out there conned me out of my
coat saying we'd meet later to fish...I never saw him again.

cal has many wild places on the shore ....much of it
inaccesible except to the expert climber ...with many
clifts that are 50 to one hundred feet high like what stax pictures
showed from Austrailia.... but hey, its the longest state
with a thousand miles of shore line. It ain't cheap to live there.

I lived in northern CA for 6 years and loved it. I lived in So CA for 3 months and I hated it, crowded, smog, traffic. People seemed fake. Not sure about the fishing, but as raven said, spend some time out there b4 making a move.

I did Northern Cal for a a year and a 1/2 and Like RIJimmy said the place rocked. Great Music scene in San Francisco, you have the Wine Country of Napa, your a 3-4 hour drive from Reno and about the same to Yosimite. Absolutely Loved it.

In the Summer it is always 85 degrees and never rains, and I mean never. You do pay for it in the winter thogh as it constantly rains for the Months of january and February.

Didn't do much fishing out there but I did take my dad out on a party boat and we slayed Rock Cod for an Afternoon.

Second favorite area of the Country....next to New England

I've never been to northern CA but except for the amusement parks and the desert, I did not like Southern CA, San Diego being the exception. I spent 3 1/2 years in 29 Palms (Marine Corps) and went back for training and more training.
Go visit before you pack up and move. The cost of living is unreal.
