Got OnStar?

How much control does Obama Motors have over your car... hmmmm.. tracking (knew that), ability to turn on your flashers (didn't know that) and ability to shut off your engine on command (didn't know that either). Damn if they declared an "emergency" they would effectively be able to "ground" all GM vehicles, even if you don't subscribe they can "activate" the service at "no charge' to prevent you using your car. Think about it, you wanna stop widespread panic with everyone trying to drive out of town, and one switch and you eliminate a very good percentage of the traffic. or prevent them from leaving....
I realize this was designed to help recover stolen vehicles, but if used wrong...... ouch

They actually responded to a help call from a police department the other day and had On-Star disable the accelerator in a vehicle that was leading them on a chase.

Big difference from the ability to tap anyone's phone, and the fact that they will disable vehicles en masse.

Besides, I've never been a big anti-rah rah patriot guy....

If the police want you to stop and you don't, this makes better sense than a high speed chase or pinning the vehicle against the guard rail.

I think police cars should be equipped with lasers and cannons like in video games. That would be much more exciting than disabling a car with OnStar.

So none of you think this is an issue? What about just a simple programming error on OnStar's part that shuts your car off on the newport bridge? Disabled is disabled. I have onstar on the wifes van and I don't remember the part about them actually having control of the vehicle in the contract. It says they could track it and find it within 3 days if it was ever stolen.

It's a good function as long as it is used for the intended purpose.
It is a great tool for law enforcement, but has capability for much more.
I just don't like the fact that something that I bought and paid for can be disabled via satellite for any reason.

I don't see it as paranoia, but as yet another "freedom" that we as Americans have given away, for the greater good of feeling safe. So what would you say to having the same controls on your computer, your rifle, or even your fishing rod (gets stolen they disable the reel). Every time we give someone else control or the ability to control, we give up more and more of freedom... don't like this at all.....

For those with OnStar, don't you get the "monthly maintenance checkups" which tell you about the complete status of your vehicle: mileage, engine status, oil level, transmission, etc. Did you know they offered free unlock the door service?
GM's OnStar is just like from the Outer Limits: "we control the horizontal....we control the vertical....": we control your GM vehicle.......we can summon help when airbags deploy....we can lock and unlock your doors.....we can find your vehicle anywhere.....we can control the engine......our control is omnipotent as we don't even need your permission.

From an OnStar Subscriber, I pay for these services monthly.

How is it a freedom?
Can't you cancel OnStar? it is a commercial service. NOT A MANDATE...
give me a %$%$%$%$ing break.

it is designed and used as a SECURITY measure... uh oh, we have ADT home security, what if they decide to lock me out of my house...

sure you can cancel the service provided to you, but that does not remove control of the vehicle... its pretty easy to flip the switch, just like when you sent them a check to start it... it is controlled on their end, you cannot disable the feature without removing it from your car. I don't know just seems like it has a possibility to be used for "the greater good" in a government decided "emergency" if the need arose. I dought they ever will, but its the fact they could if they wanted to that bugs me.

It's quite easy to remove. You don't like it, don't use it. You know that officials have the capability of tracking your every moment based on triangulating your cell phone position and not just when you're using it? That was initiated years ago.

I guess the Big Brother thing started a while ago.

If your car is more than a few years old, it won't have the accelerator disabling feature. But, if you're really paranoid (which it's quite obvious you are or just fishing for something to piss and moan about with an attempt of putting it on the administration) you can remove it quite easily.
CTS-CTS-V FAQ: How do I disable Onstar?

Let's not forget the administration that set the precedent for your "government decided 'emergencies'".

Which is more creepy:

someone sitting at a computer with the ability to control your car

OR

someone sitting at a computer controlling a flying drone loaded with bombs (half a world away)

If the technology exists, man will use it for both good and bad........any way to make a $.

(please I am not trying define what is good or bad by these examples)

You should be more creeped out by the fact that a well motivated hacker can access your bank account online and take all your money.
