Should work fine as pencils even with the added weight. You might consider a lighter wood so they'll be a little more bouyant. You can still load them with lead to get your target weight. I do some from AYC that are 5 inches and 2 oz. They'll work like a pencil fine in moving water. A little harder to work in flat water. They'll cast well too. Ask Ratty to show you one the next time you see him
