Underwrapping

I'm just starting my first rod. I got a SW1088 blank. What is the purpose of having a layer of thread under guide and wrapping?

Hi M_S,

I'm assuming you are speaking of "underwraps". They are to protect the blank from the guide feet and decoration. Not absolutely necessary - it all depends on what action you want the rod to have when you are finished wrapping and to give it a personalized look(custom). I almost always underwrap.

Happy wrapping,

Chris

It is to protect the blank from the guide foot cutting thru the blank while flexing.

Thanks guys,
I thought it may have been purely decorational. Now I know.
