Question Clear before Envirotex necessary?

I have the steps down but ,is it necessary to put on a clear coat before envirotex for the envirotex to grab onto the plug or is it just done to be able to hadle the plug for wireing etc.? Seems there are just so many ways for something ot go wrong along the way. When I make these plugs I not only want to have them come out looking nice but I want the finish to be destroyed by fish teeth only not water.

Thanks you guys have all been great.

I don't. My color dries flat, that seems to give grip enough. I use acrylics, cheap ones at that, and they stay stuck to etex. The few that do peel, have peeled all the way down to wood, so I figured poor sealing.

that depends.
solid colors that won't run during epoxy, no need for clear....
if you spent an hour to make airbrushed squigly do-dads all over the plug and they look mint... i'd spray a quick dry clear on there so they don't sag or melt together.
