Striper cup eliminates weigh-ins.

http://www.stripercup.com/striper-cu...tes-weigh-ins/

I wish they would have had the foresight to do it back when the tournament started and at least some of us contacted them with that suggestion and ended our subscriptions to the magazine. It would have set a good example.

No, no, no. we’re 30… 30, three zero.

I emailed them years ago, urging them to go "no Kill" format... even cancelled my subscription. Bravo... Better late than never, should have been done years ago. I suspect the decision is based on the possibility that more people have now opted out of the kill format tourny, and this change will keep the tournament from going under (basically saying they really have no choice if they want to stay alive).
I'm not being cynical or negative, thats just a common sense conclusion from my perspective ... They have been aware of state of the fishery for years.

A high-profile influential platform like OTW magazine should always be at the forefront of advocating a healthy fishery, not the last one to the party.

Does this mean no more dead fish entries at all?

Maybe the weigh in spring RI (South County)
tournament will now go to C&R Tournament?

Kudos to OTW for making a significant move in the right direction. Hindsight is 20/20. This is something that can/will have a positive effect on the fishery.

I have not liked the tourney since its inception. IMO it was formed at the wrong time for the wrong reasons. This is nothing against my friends who work at OTW - just the tourney.

To be a legitimate tourney that is responsible to striped bass conservation it needs to do a few more things.

It must donate a portion of the proceeds to some sort of charitable cause.

It should limit participation to amateurs only - no professional fishermen (for example no Charter Capts or crews (patrons only), no one holding a R&R Comm pin hookers license).

Bass entered cannot be sold commercially.

I had one of the first subscriptions to OTW in 96. I cancelled 4 years ago after contacting Chris Megan and telling him the Cup should be C&R. Took then 4 years to figure out they were one of the reasons the stocks are in decline.

No boat, back in the suds.

Better late than never. I was quite vocal about this years ago to the point Megan called me to explain his reasoning $$$ to keep it a kill tournament. I have not been a subscriber for a decade but this is a positive step.

exactly.

They contacted me this fall about running an article about me and my artwork. As I new artist I definitely could have used the exposure...

however I declined, and politely reminded them about their "yes you can eat albies" article. between the magazine, the tourney, their spot burning BS report video reports etc....

I'm not sorry, #^&#^&#^&#^& those guys. All they care about is $$$, and they did this simply because they had no other choice....not because they actually have some morals... all they did was add some BS marketing 101 speak making themselves look good and patting themselves on the back...

Exactly.
Just eliminate the tournament altogether!
I know plenty of guys who fished it in the past just for the $ & prizes.
They could give a crap about the tournament.
Just winning the monthly prizes then to resell the prize, and some sold the fish on commercial days.

Good.

As far as the "Honor System", there was going to be cheating either way/ This is good that OTW has moved this way

Funny. One of their senior editors also contacted me last year to write a series of articles about the "old days" fishing the surf on The Back. I said "nope".

IMHO:
This should be the next stop for the reform of eliminating "Weigh in".

Eliminate all contests... Hand out prizes to everyone that can tell a believable tale about that "huge fish" they caught, from shore of course on the wrong tide and on the full moon.

Instead of a Fishing Tournament we'll have Fishing Tales

You Mass guys can bring your smoke and IPA beer and just "talk" about the good old day...

Sort of like South Park and those "Member Berries"

Didn't SWE try something like that and then drop it like a bag of hot rox?
I believe you were doing quite well in that contest, no?

I thought it was pretty cool, never really sure what happened except that he resigned...guess nobody else wanted to run with it. Too bad too...was hoping to catch you on the point chart >>CBeans

......it finally happened, there are no more secret spots
