Installing bead board ceiling

My living room and kitchen have really awful sponged ceilings over sheet rock. A simple option were were thinking would be to just scrape off the sponged plaster and go over with a thin bead board. I've installed it on walls (using adhesive and staples) but never on a ceiling.

Is my assumption that the sponged plaster will scrape off easily likely to be correct? I'm afraid it's going to pull off the paper and fall apart.

Photo would help as there are many types of so called sponged finishes. First off I would suggest you get a quote from a plasterer to skimcoat it with a smooth finish, assuming that is what you would want. Then you would have a cost basis to compare with scraping , buying and installing the beadboard.

I agree it's cheap and ugly. We figured we'd upgrade when the ceilings were done. That was 12 years ago. We rarely use the ceiling light in the kitchen so we don't even notice it. The rest of the interior is all pretty nice.

I just ordered Hi-Lite Vapor Jar's to replace all the exterior lighting which is falling apart. They're pretty sweet...hopefully they'll last.
