scrub a mac?

We have a 2.5 year old Macbook at home that pretty much does what we bought it for - media creation and storage, internet portal and occasional spreadsheet / word processing work. I nor my wife are technical with computers, maybe a few steps beyond plug and play but thats it. What can / should we do to scrub it for viruses and spy-wear? The reason I ask is her email was recently invaded and she sent one of those prescription spam emails to everyone in her list.

Thanks in advance.

James

There's not much out there for Macs as they're really not prone to viruses/spyware like Windows.
