Building season is afoot....what's everyone working on?

Hey fellas,

I finally got some shop time which was exactly what I needed to take my mind off other uncontrollable issues
In the past there has been some interest in my drying rack and I've seen some awesome ones posted. Here's some video of my custom drying rack in action (low quality, taken from my cell phone). Need final detail paint and another couple of coats epoxy and DONE! I'm currently trying to finish up some X-mas presents before I launch into full build/test mode.

I'd love to see what everyone else is working on!

Thanks for taking a look and Happy Holidays

MS

Gonna put some time into some Pikies-both striper and husky. May even do some swimmers for the smaller stuff.

Just got up and running this week. Built a new bench and turned about 50 bodies. Been doing lip slots and belly weights this morning. I have big trollers, dannies skinny and regular, eelies, pencils, and some blue streak/atom hybrids.

It's not the bait
At the end of your line
It's the fishing hole
Where all the fish is blind

Hoping to turn some ornaments, Christmas trees and tree lightbulbs this week for some holiday cheer and presents. Won't get to plugs until after the holidays as the shop is in cabinet and shelving mode...

Re-configuring my shop after having the new gas boiler (wall mounted) installed this week. Moving my plug lathe onto a stand so I now have 2 open benches to do work on... All my floor mounted machines are on lockable casters/wheeled platforms so I can have plenty of room with long boards. Need to make a few more Xmas gifts before i get back to plugs

Bill and a few in process and a few complete

Saw may Dad again this weekend. He finished 2 more 9" needles (my best catcher in 2011 on MV and in RI). Also a 6 inch swimmer ( a tribute to my favorite Afterhours Swimmer) which has been my best swimmer and hopefully Bill's will do the trick as well. See another hand turned copy in process next to the original. Also he finished a nice medium sized Danny. Finally after his 91st Birthday a few weeks ago he has another 9 inch needle in lathe and a swimmer and medium Danny wired and ready for painting. We are looking forward to Plugfest March 3rd.

In response to Blonde Terror. My dad's lathe is an old crafstman from the 30's that belonged to his dad. He also says they had a 12 footer in their cabinet making shop back then.

I agree. I can only hope I am still plug building and fishing when I am 91.

I regret I have not posted anything for a while but I have been building plugs lately. For the most part I am working on some of the same stuff that worked for me last season, (sliders, peanuts, needles etc) incorporating some new building tips and ideas I picked up during fishing season. Hopefully always improving. I will post a
couple pics of the latest batch when I finish with top coats. For now here are a couple pics of a few from my last batch. Some of these will be going to Plugfest.

I sure hope i can be making plugs if I am lucky enough to make it to 91. He still has a sparkle in his eye... they must have made some great pencil post bed legs with that 12' long spindle lathe.

I am looking forward to seeing you and your Dad at plugfest.

Chris

Depends on what I find for paint on hand.....Might try one marbelized. Need to clean up the tree tops where I come just short of parting completely.

hardcore from the shore: Man, those pics brought back memories of my grandfather in his woodshop. He retired as a mason and began making furniture in his garage, must have 15 pieces in my house! thanks for posting.

Nightfighter, cool idea on the christmas tree and lights, gonna have to try that!

Muskyslayer96, My friend gave me one of those little rotessiri ovens little bigger than a breadbox. I plan to try to convert it to a spinner or just salvage the engine to build one. Thanks for posting, gives me some ideas. Should be a good project this winter and I am getting sick of spinning those plugs by hand for hours.

Last winter was my 1st year building plugs, I learned a ton from all of you and from trial and error (mostly error, HA!). This fall I ran into a big run of needlefish, but had not made anything to match. I picked up a store bought needle and superstrike 1 3/4 oz. I hope to spend time trying to make some imatations that sink or suspend with weighting right and proper hook placement. The needlefish I encountered were about 7" long and fairly skinny, so curious how I will get the through hole lined up well and have enough space to place weights. Should be interesting.

This was the first one. lots of room for improvement. Going to try using a recip saw blade for better depth of branch definition. Left it rough at bottom of branches by choice.

Man still building at 91...unbelievable...cool, cool

Some great building going on here, exciting to get the season started. Here is a little video of my finishing shop, and all the baits I have waiting for me the get my rear in gear and finish them up. The sad thing is the majority of them are from last year

Happy building and holidays
