I reinstalled my XP, and there is no sound devise detected. I went into device manager and there just isn't a sound devise.
I need help on this one.
Thanks

Three options:

Did you computer come with a driver disk? This will have all the drivers needed for the devices on your computer.

Do a scan with Windows Update. This may find the necessary driver.

Third option, try and find out the sound device on your computer and you can download the driver from the manufacturer.

I might be able to hunt the driver down if you can give me the make/model of your computer. Some area lot easier to find than others.

Arrow

go to accessories-system tools-system information
and learn what sound card you have by name

have your serial and model numbers handy for
putting them into a site if needed and re download the driver

basically the driver went south

the other thing to do is to restart
your PC hitting the F8 key repeatedly
until you reach the "last known good configuration" screen
and select it

I see that there are two audio devises, one is Unimodem half duplex and the other is Realtek High Definiton. Status on both is "error".
I've tried to down load the drivers, but I still have this problem.

What brand computer is it? Service tag if Dell or HP? If a home built, pop off the cover and right the brand and model # of the motherboard

HI John, it's a Dell Dimension E510. I'm not familiar with the service tag.
And there is another tower someone gave me, and it has the same problem. No sound devise detected. This looks like a custom job. It's an Antec but I can't find the name of the motherboard. There are names on the motherboard like, Conroe PreslerFSB 1066Dual Core CPU, AGP 8X, Dual ChannelDDR400/DDR1167.
But I do appreciate the help. Thanks

Just a guess,
Install Malwarebytes.org free , run a quick scan .

Malware / virus also will disable a sound driver

Lightbulb E510 Audio Driver

Don't know about Antec, but the Dell should be pretty straight forward. Try the link provided here for the Dell SigmaTel Widnows XP download:
http://en.community.dell.com/support.../19628647.aspx

Good Luck.

Good Luck.

Jimmy - what TR said above. If that doesn't work (and you bought the optional sound use this link and go with the Creative Labs Driver: Drivers & Downloads )

But do TR's first.

If that all doesn't work recheck your system tag as the one you posted did not work.

The service # for the Dell is: 7NNLZ81. I went to the Dell site, and got the drivers needed. I installed the chipset, and than the audio driver, when I restarted my comp. I got a message that said the system doesn't support the driver for the audio. Any ideas?
Thanks

Did you install this driver?

Drivers and Downloads

And just to be sure - the sound card is enabled in the BIOS?
(usually under Integrated Peripherals)

What was listed for your service tag - have you gone to Dell's site with your tag and downloaded / tried all of the drivers?

I know you stated that you reinstalled XP, but did you buy the PC with Vista or anything other than Windows XP already installed on it before you changed the OS?

Other than the other suggestions, that is the only thing I can think of that will cause a problem with drivers and incompatibility.

If it had Vista or you make an upgrade, some drivers won't flat out work with XP since they were designed for Vista.

Yes, and it's still the same.

Shouldn't but anything is possible.

Do this for me. Go to Control Panel > Sounds > Play sounds > and see if you hear anything? Does it attempt to play? Or is there anything stated in the device properties?

Shoot me a PM friday or so, maybe I can do a remote check over the weekend.

I did the sound test and I got a message stating, "your hardware can not play sounds"
Under hardware properties, it says, " location unknown"
On the volume tab, it says, " no audio device"

Thanks for your time and effort.

Going from different types of XP pretty much won't cause that issue. It is possible but I was just clarifying the OS to rule that out. If I could give any more help I would but all the answers in my head are already posted by others.

The embedded sound hardware on the motherboard may de defected. Without the appropriate test equipment it would be difficult to diagnose. At a minimum inspect, reset all the cards along with cleaning the gold contacts.
Afterwards reload the OS.

Or salvage independent sound card, plug and play.
