LCD HDTV's

I know there's been some threads recently on TV's. They didn't cover what I was looking for. I've pretty much made up my mind on an LCD HDTV Flatpanel (I was actually looking for HD CRT, too tough to find and didn't want to lay out the cash for plasma). Anyway, the guy at the store got me confused about some of the components. Specifically, what is the purpose of the tuner card and do I need one? Same for the cable card. I can't see any reason to get it if all it buys me is the programming guide, Pay-Per-View, and I no longer need the cablebox. Is there another reason to have this card over the box? It seems like the cable provider should be able to get me either.

The only real advantage to a CableCard is that it eliminates a bulky cable box. You'll still have to pay the cable company and you probably won't have the TV Guide style features you would normally get from your cable provider. Some TV's have TV Guide built into them though.

I love my DVR cable box from Cox; recording programs is very easy and everything is intuitive. It acts as a Tivo in addition to the normal functions of a cable box.

I don't really know anything about a "tuner card" though.

I had my IT guy at work do the research for me and I bought the 34" Toshiba 34HFX85 HDTV Cinema series he recommended and it's a great picture and at less than $900 it saved me some money. I just couldn't bring myself to spend the thousands for the big screens and having watch on this for a week, I think I'm going to be happy with the decision.

Jimbo,
The Cablecard option will take the place of a cable box with two limitations. First, it will only work with the TV it is assigned to and can not be moved to a different TV. Second and more important, it only provides one way communication to the cable system. That means with a cable card no On Demand or Pay per View as you can not send information to the cable system. That means no late night porn..

I have also read that CableCards sometimes have setup problems.

If you don't have an issue with the sie of a cable box, I'd keep it.

Hoss,
Keep the box; I've got a new Samsung dlp 1080 res with the cable card option and the hd tuner built in.
I still love my hd box from comcast, and it costs me like $5 extra a month.
Too bad yer going for the lcd, I love my dlp (it's my second).
PM me and I'll give you my new cell number and we can talk.
Later,
Rick
